    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the detection of a position signal error by determining the mutual time interval of plural prescribed magnetic flux transition couples in a servo pattern, generating a speed invariant position signal and detecting the position signal error so as to correlate a servo read head signal and the prescribed servo pattern recorded on a recording medium. SOLUTION: In a tape/head converting direction capable of reading the servo pattern, a servo read head 26 is relatively moved at the time of moving a tape straightly to the servo read head 26 along with the lengthwise direction of a center line 30 on a servo track. The servo read head 26 detects the servo pattern of a magnetic flux transition, generates an analog servo read signal and supplies it through a servo signal line 34 to a signal decoder 36. The signal decoder 36 processes the servo read signal, generates the position signal and supplies it to a servo controller 40.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more easily detect a position signal error by setting a width of a servo read head to be smaller than half a width of a narrowest data read head when the width is defined as a size of the head in a direction perpendicular to a conversion direction. SOLUTION: A relative move of a servo read head 26 in a conversion direction of a tape head whereby the servo read head can read a servo pattern is generated when a tape 20 moves straight with respect to the servo read head 26 in a longitudinal direction of a center line 30 of a servo track. The servo pattern of a magnetic flux transition is detected, and a servo read head signal of an analog form is generated and supplied to a signal decoder 36. The signal decoder 36 processes the signal and supplies via a position signal line 38 to a servo controller 40. The servo controller 40 monitors a position signal from the signal decoder 36 and generates a control signal necessary for the head to reach a desired position.

    Abstract: A track following servo system is disclosed for use with magnetic recording media 20 in which magnetic servo track 27 patterns contain transitions recorded at more than one azimuthal orientation across the width of the servo track. The timing of a signal derived from reading at any point across the width of such a pattern varies continuously as the read head is moved across the servo track. The pattern is read by a servo read head 26 whose width is small compared to the servo track pattern. The combination of a wide servo pattern and a narrow servo read head offers excellent position sensing linearity and dynamic range. In the preferred embodiment, the servo read head is also narrow with respect to the data tracks, which provides the additional advantages of superior immunity to position sensing errors caused by defects or temporal variations in the servo read head, defects in the servo pattern, wear of the head, or debris collection. Position sensing with this system is achieved by deriving a ratio of two servo pattern intervals and therefore is insensitive to medium speed during reading. The servo patterns may include spacing intervals 70 recognizable for error detection and correction purposes. The servo tracks may be recorded using a patterned multiple gap servo write head 400 whose magnetic gaps have geometries appropriate to generate the desired servo patterns.

    Abstract: A tape movement constraint is provided for a tape drive system which moves a tape longitudinally along a tape path across a tape head, the tape having longitudinal tracks. The tape head has a track following servo system for moving the head laterally for following lateral movement of the tracks, where the tape is subject to lateral transient movement. A tape roller bearing closely adjacent the tape head is rotatable about a central axis parallel to the cylindrical peripheral surface, allowing the tape freedom of movement in the longitudinal direction. The tape roller bearing has a frictional cylindrical peripheral surface for contacting and engaging the surface of the tape and constraining movement of the tape in the lateral direction, thereby reducing the rate of the lateral transient movement of the tape to allow the track following servo system to follow the reduced rate lateral transient movement of the longitudinal tracks. Any potential air bearing that could form between the surface of the tape and the surface of the roller bearing is collapsed to insure that the roller bearing frictionally contacts and engages the surface of the tape.

    Abstract: A conduction heat transfer connection is made between a heat source and a heat sink which is flexible so as to adapt to variations in distance between the source and sink and which maintains the required force on the heat source to obtain the required heat transfer across the junction therebetween. The connection consists of a heat conductive metallic foil bundle of sufficient thickness to contact sufficient surface area of the heat source to provide the required heat transfer and of sufficient thinness to be flexible enough to absorb the expansion and contraction due to temperature changes as well as the differences in distance between the heat source and sink and of sufficient length to contact at or near the other end thereof the heat sink.

    Abstract: A source of energy is selectively applied to a liquid stream to reduce the surface tension of the liquid and is applied before the stream would randomly break up into droplets. Both the quantity of energy applied and the time period that the energy is applied are controlled to control the time to droplet breakoff and the time between droplets by selectively reducing the surface tension of segments of the stream. The source of energy can be high intensity light, which is converted by the stream to heat energy, or a source of heat (resistive or inductive) with the resistive heat being applied to the stream by conduction and the inductive heat being converted by the stream to heat energy.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a magnetic tape media having addressing data information superimposed on prerecorded track following servo information. The servo information is recorded in magnetic flux transition patterns defining at least one longitudinal servo track.     Abstract: The invention is a constrained pivot compound radius tape post guide. The post is mounted on an axle which allows it to pivot when the tape changes direction. The pivoting action serves to peel away all tape which has been in stationary contact with the post, thereby reducing startup stiction. Above a certain rotation angle the post is prevented from further rotation either by a fixed stop or by torque exerted on the post by the tape which is under tension.
