    Abstract: In a cathode ray display tube the front of the display screen (20) is shielded from the electric fields generated by the electromagnetic deflection coils (40) by an electrically conductive extension (60') of the usually provided exterior conductive coating 60 on the tube funnel, the extension coating (60') being disposed between the deflection coils (40) and the cathode ray tube envelope (10). Preferably a frustoconical insulating insert 90 electrically insulates the deflection coils from the coating extension 60'. Alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown), the coating 60 is effectively extended by a conductive coating (62), on the inner face of a flexible plastics frustoconical insert (61), in electrical contact with and secured to the coating 60.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a combined directional antenna and rotor blade for a helicopter. The antenna comprises three or more electrically non-conductive rotor blades, 801-805, each having an electrical conductor positioned parallel to the major axis of a respective rotor blade. Two of the electrical conductors on blades 801,805, having angular positions nearer to a predetermined angular position are connected via a connections means e.g. slip rings and brushes to apparatus for transmission or reception of radio waves. The remaining conductors on blades 802-804 may either be connected to the body of the helicopter or supplied with a signal out of phase compared to that supplied to the two electrical conductors. Also disclosed is a communications system including apparatus for the transmission or reception of radio waves. As the rotors rotate, different pairs of blades are selected to maintain the antenna pattern in the predetermined position. The antennae conductors may be formed from the metallic anti-erosion layer on the rotor leading edges or from heater coils embedded in the rotors under that layer (Fig 2 not shown).

    Abstract: An elapsed time recording device includes a counter (130) for incrementally advancing a count value from an initial value towards and beyond a threshold in response to successive clock pulses of a clock signal. Control logic (140) enables the counter (130) to incrementally advance the count value in response to a first input (pin 3) and a second input (pin 1) being at or near a first voltage level, and holds the count value in response to the first input (pin 3) being at or near a second voltage level and the second input (pin 1) being at or near the first voltage level. Setting logic (210) sets the count value to a value beyond the threshold in response to the first input (pin 3) and the second input (pin 1) being at or near the second voltage level when the count value is between the initial value and the threshold.

    Abstract: A variable magnetic field between the mouse 300 and a ferrous surface 310 provides a down force that stabilises the position of the mouse. The mouse 300 may contain an electromagnetic coil 306 and the strength of the down force may be continuously controlled by an operator, via a trigger control 104 which varies the current through the coil 306. In an alternative embodiment, the magnetic field is provided by a permanent magnet. The magnetic field may, alternatively, be provided by the work surface and the mouse may include a ferrous plane. The mouse 300 to be used for display cursor control in environments where high levels of vibration and rapid motional changes make a conventional mouse unusable.
