Abstract: A CRT heater circuit for a CRT display is described, the circuit comprising control means (4) for dynamically varying a voltage (Vh) across the cathode heater in response to variations in the beam current density (I) within the CRT. In this way the optimum voltage across the heater coils is maintained, thus preventing "cathode stripping" at times of peak beam currents, and optimising the CRT's working lifetime.

Abstract: An elapsed time recording device includes a counter (130) for incrementally advancing a count value from an initial value towards and beyond a threshold in response to successive clock pulses of a clock signal. Control logic (140) enables the counter (130) to incrementally advance the count value in response to a first input (pin 3) and a second input (pin 1) being at or near a first voltage level, and holds the count value in response to the first input (pin 3) being at or near a second voltage level and the second input (pin 1) being at or near the first voltage level. Setting logic (210) sets the count value to a value beyond the threshold in response to the first input (pin 3) and the second input (pin 1) being at or near the second voltage level when the count value is between the initial value and the threshold. Because the device consists essentially of electronic circuit elements, it can be implemented in the form of an application specific integrated circuit package suitable for high volume manufacture at relatively low cost. The device is therefore favourable for use in mass produced electrical appliances. Because the count value is immediately advanced beyond the threshold in response to removal of the second input voltage, advance of the count value towards the threshold cannot be prevented or delayed by tampering with pin connections of the device.

Abstract: A cathode ray tube display comprises a cathode ray display tube 80 having a cathode for emitting an electron beam and a control electrode 61 for controlling the intensity of the electron beam. A video amplifier 30 is connected to the cathode for modulating the electron beam as a function of an input video signal to generate a picture on the screen of the cathode ray display tube. A brightness control circuit 70 varies a voltage on the control electrode 61 to vary the brightness of the picture. A contrast control circuit 60 varies the gain of the video amplifier 30 to vary the contrast of the picture. A beam current limit circuit 50 has a first output TH1 connected to the contrast control circuit 60 for reducing the gain of the video amplifier 30 in response to the electron beam current exceeding a first threshold and a second output TH2 connected to the brightness control circuit 70 for reducing the voltage applied to control electrode in response to the beam current exceeding a second threshold greater than the first threshold. The second threshold prevents excessive beam currents from damaging the EHT generator when the voltage applied to the accelerating electrode of the cathode ray tube is incorrectly adjusted.

Abstract: Display drive means 90-150 generates a picture on the display screen 160 in response to picture information R, G, B, H, V from a video source 20 releasably connectable to the display apparatus. User control means 60 adjusts the picture generated by the display drive means 90-150 in response to a manual input. Selection means 90, 170 may select one of a plurality of sets of control data for communication to the video source 20 in response to a configuration code input via the user control means 60.

Abstract: Cathode ray tube display apparatus comprises a cathode ray tube display screen (10) for displaying successive frames of a non-interlaced video image in response to excitation by at least one raster-scanned electron beam. A line timebase circuit (40) sequentially addresses the or each electron beam to successive pixels on the screen in a line of a raster in response to a line timebase sync signal. A frame timebase (50) circuit sequentially addresses the or each electron beam to successive lines of the raster in response to a frame timebase sync signal. The frame timebase circuit (50) comprises means for offseting successive frames of the video image in a direction transverse of the lines of the raster by a distance less than the spacing of adjacent lines of the raster. Gaps between adjacent pixels on successive lines of the raster are made invisible to the viewer because the persistence of a viewers eye effectively integrates the image content of successive frames. Also, because the successive frames have the same image content, there is no low frequency component in the image spectrum below the frame timebase frequency. Therefore, the displayed image is free from objectionable flicker.

Abstract: In a cathode ray display tube the front of the display screen (20) is shielded from the electric fields generated by the electromagnetic deflection coils (40) by an electrically conductive extension (60') of the usually provided exterior conductive coating 60 on the tube funnel, the extension coating (60') being disposed between the deflection coils (40) and the cathode ray tube envelope (10). Preferably a frustoconical insulating insert 90 electrically insulates the deflection coils from the coating extension 60'. Alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown), the coating 60 is effectively extended by a conductive coating (62), on the inner face of a flexible plastics frustoconical insert (61), in electrical contact with and secured to the coating 60.
