    Abstract: An I/O controller for disparate serial memories and a cache memory for the controller, comprising a device data flow section with a device bus linking a buffer RAM through registers to the respective memories and to a buffer register and further comprising a cache bus linking the buffer register to a cache memory and through a channel register to the main processor. Data is transferred from the disks to the buffer register through the buffer RAM. The device and cache data flows can proceed independently.

    Abstract: A method of providing wireless local area network providers with subscriber administration services can include receiving from a processing node in a wireless local area network a request through a gateway interface for approval for a subscriber to access the wireless local area network. The request can specify subscriber identifying information. A determination can be made as to whether the subscriber is approved to access the wireless local area network using the subscriber identifying information by querying a telecommunications subscriber data store. The processing node of the wireless local area network can be notified of the determination results through the gateway interface. If the subscriber is approved, a record of the wireless session can be stored in a session data store.

    Abstract: Apparatus and a method for automatically configuring communication port assignments in dockable portable computer systems wherein a portable computer unit is operable both on a stand-alone basis and attached (docked) to a generally stationary expansion (docking) unit providing extended connectivity and power sourcing facilities. The portable computer unit may contain integral connectors (RS232, telephone jacks, parallel port connectors, etc.) and internal circuit devices operating through the connectors (modems, circuits supporting RS232 signalling, etc.). The docking unit may also have such connectors and associated circuits. The computer user may assign internal logical communication paths com x (x = 1, 2, ...) to these connectors and their associated circuits. When the portable unit is in a docked mode, care must be taken that duplicate paths are not concurrently active in the portable and docking units leading to potentially conflicting signal processes in the units. The present invention provides an automatic initialization process whereby the system is automatically configured to operate without path conflicts when it is docked and to make full use of all internal paths in the portable unit when the base portable unit is not docked; all transparent to system users.

    Abstract: A computer has two processors. A main processor operates under the control of an operating system and provides overall control of the computer for executing application programs. The main processor also assists in power management by executing certain interrupts and controlling a power control register to turn power on and off to various devices. A power management processor monitors ambient temperature and humidity, and battery conditions, and generates interrupts as a result of predetermined changes. Such processor also controls charging of the battery. Logic means are responsive to predetermined conditions to also generate interrupts.
