Abstract: 1,061,319. Optical filters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1965 [Dec. 18, 1964], No.52430/65. Heading G2J. A light filter 14 comprises a plurality of partially transparent spaced layers 18 of silver chloride disposed within a member of transparent material, the layers being spaced so that (i) along any line normal to one of the two outer layers the spacings between the layers are substantially equal, (ii) the size of the spacings taken along a series of lines normal to a particular line varies progressively along said particular line, and (iii) coherent reflection occurs for light of different frequencies when directed along different ones of said series of lines. The filter is formed by setting up standing waves of a beam of monochromatic light in a photographic emulsion containing silver halide, thereby depositing silver at the antinodes of the waves, the intensity of the beam varying from one edge to the other. The emulsion is developed, a fixer causing it to shrink and hence causing the spacings between the layers of the deposited silver (later treated with mercuric chloride) to vary according to the intensity of the light directed over the surface. When light directed at any point on the surface of the developed emulsion is at such a frequency that its wavelength is twice the distance between adjacent reflecting layers beneath that point, a coherent reflective scattering of light is obtained. A scale (50) Fig. 6 (not shown) may be provided along one edge of the film (14) to indicate the frequency at which light is reflected from the film, which may be used as a frequency generator Fig. 4 (not shown) or to identify an unknown frequency Fig. 5 (not shown).

Abstract: 1291673 Processing holograms INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 24629/71 Heading G2C The optical diffraction stability of laser interrogated holograms which have been developed by an etch-bleach process from silver halide gelatin media is improved by treating the hologram with a solution of a gelatin hardening agent comprising a dichromate/chloride solution or a formaldehyde solution. The hardening treatment may be followed by heating in air, vacuum, helium or nitrogen and may be preceded by a U/V exposure.

Abstract: A system for rejecting second and subsequent copies of an informationally-equivalent card or badge asserted into a client/server system by processing only those cards having transaction histories recorded thereon by comparison matching a history recorded in a central repository and then rewriting the history on the card and in the repository. The rewritten histories include the current transaction. Counterfeit cards, informationally equivalent to the original card prior to the transaction update of the original card, will be rejected when asserted into the system since their histories mismatch that recorded in the repository.

Abstract: An opto-optical light deflector/modulator has means (14, 16, 18, 20) for providing first (10) and second (12) coherent wave fronts of wavelength (λo) to travel in a transparent optical acitve medium (22) to produce an optically generated standing wave that induces a periodic refractive index variation in the medium suitable for diffraction purposes. The device also includes means (24) for providing a third wavefront (λ 1 ) to travel in said medium which is diffracted by the periodic refractive index variation induced by the first and second wavefronts.

Abstract: A brightfield/darkfield microscope illuminator has two axicon mirrors 30, 34 and a third plane mirror 26 for use with two light beams from different sources. An open shutter 20 positioned in the path of one beam 16 provides brightfield illumination. An open shutter 22 positioned in the path of the other beam 18 provides darkfield illumination. This illuminator easily switches between operation in the darkfield and brightfield modes, uses substantially all the light in one beam for darkfield illumination and easily balances the illumination between the two light sources.

Abstract: A polarization detector system for an optical data storage system including a substrate 32 having a pair of overlapping optical couplers 38 and 40 for separately coupling first and second polarization components of a light beam into first and second waveguide channel 50 and 54. The channels are oriented with their longitudinal axes 52 and 56 approximately perpendicular to each other. First and second optical detectors 60 and 70 are located in the first and second waveguide channels, respectively, for measuring the light intensity of the first and second polarization components. Comparison of the measurements provides polarization data.
