Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the fraudulent use of the duplicated matter of a fake card with high reliability by an existing equipment in an electronic transaction channel by recording one part of the latest transaction history on a card and a local or remote access or credit approving mechanism. SOLUTION: A secondary duplicated matter such as a card used by a client/ server system can be rejected by processing only a card or badge in which a transaction history compared and matched with a history recorded in a central repository is recorded, and rewriting the history in the card or badge and the repository. The rewritten history includes the present transaction. When a fake card informationally equivalent to an original card before the update of the transaction of the original card is used by the system, the history of the card is not matched with the history recorded in the repository, and the card is rejected.

Abstract: A thin film metal alloy magnetic recording disk has a protective nitrogen-containing carbon overcoat which is thinner and which exhibits better wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and hardness than conventional carbon overcoats without nitrogen. The nitrogen present in the disk overcoat substantially reduces the film stress. Because of the low stress of the overcoat film there is significantly less likelihood that the overcoat will delaminate, buckle, or otherwise wear away from the underlying magnetic layer during operation of the disk file. This allows for significantly reduced overcoat thickness, thus reducing the head-disk spacing in the disk file. The overcoat, even though significantly thinner than prior art carbon overcoats, exhibits better wear and corrosion resistance than carbon overcoats without nitrogen. In addition, when the carbon overcoat contains hydrogen, the presence of the nitrogen increases the hardness of the film if present in a specific amount dependent on the amount of hydrogen present.

Abstract: A system for rejecting second and subsequent copies of an informationally-equivalent card or badge asserted into a client/server system by processing only those cards having transaction histories recorded thereon by comparison matching a history recorded in a central repository and then rewriting the history on the card and in the repository. The rewritten histories include the current transaction. Counterfeit cards, informationally equivalent to the original card prior to the transaction update of the original card, will be rejected when asserted into the system since their histories mismatch that recorded in the repository.

Abstract: A thin film cobalt alloy magnetic recording disk (50) has a texturing layer (52) located between the disk substrate (51) and the top surface of the disk to provide texturing of the disk (50) at the head-disk interface. The texturing layer (52) is made up of generally contiguous clusters of aluminum nitride (AlN) with rounded upper surfaces. The AlN texturing layer (52) is formed by sputtering an Al target in the presence of N2 gas. The subsequently sputter-deposited layers replicate the upper surface of the contiguous AlN clusters, resulting in a textured surface at the head-disk interface. The AlN texturing layer (52) may also be sputter deposited above the magnetic layer (56) in the middle of the protective carbon overcoat (61-62). The density and size of the AlN clusters in the texturing layer (52), and thus the texture of the completed disk at the head-disk interface, are controlled by the amount of N2, the sputtering power and pressure, and the substrate (51) temperature.

Abstract: Described is a way for computing proximity (location-based proximity or preference-based proximity) between mobile wireless subscribers (who use different services) without either divulging their location/preference to th e other (preservation of privacy). Privacy is kept by providing location/preference information in steps, along with an evaluation function. The services receive partial results and then locally compute the final result, or proximity. The term proximity includes not just physical proximit y but also multi-dimensional data such as preference profiles and vectors (e.g ., an affinity for baseball, apple pie, and ballroom dancing.).
