Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically reproduce a specific video program stored in a digital video disk(DVD) with a movie by providing a step, etc., for automatically selecting one of plural prescribed video programs or movies at the time of starting displaying of the DVD. SOLUTION: The value of an argument stored in a DVD is read (S308). Next, Ndick being a numerical between 0 and Ntotal is calculated by a microprocessor with a microcode coefficient Nzero as a first track, with Ntotal as the total number of tracks and with Nvideo as the first track of a video (S310). Next, Rpick is calculated by using a prescribed expression (S311). Further, a reading head is sought with respect to a track decided as Nzero+Rpick (S312) to judge the completion propriety of the reproduction of an Nzero+Rpick track (S314). Then, when track reproduction is already completed, the reading head is moved to an Nvideo track (S316) to reproduce read picture data (S318).

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily select icons among plural icons which are placed in a computer display by integrating plural related icons in a master icon so that the integrated icons are concealed from a visual field. SOLUTION: First, whether the icons to be extinguished exist or not, namely, whether the icons to be integrated in the master icon exist or not is decided in an inquiry step 70 as 'do the icons to be extinguished exist?'. When one or more icons are decided to be integrated, the icons are extinguished in a step 72 and the master icons are graphically changed if necessary. Thus, easier and more prompt selection of specified icons is enabled by assisting a computer user to operate the icons by a manual work via a complicated task in the computer display.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more promptly select specified icons by assisting a manual work via a complicated task by deciding what icons among plural icons is linked and drawing graphic display among the icons to be linked. SOLUTION: First, decision regarding what icons are linked is performed in a step 90 'to decide what icons are linked'. After that, decision to draw the graphic display among these icons is performed in a step 92 'to draw the graphic display between the icons'. Finally, decision whether new icons exist in the display or not is performed in an inquiry step 94 as 'is the new icons are displayed?' Thus, easy and prompt selection of the specified icons by assisting a computer user to operate the icons by the manual work via the complicated task.

Abstract: A bit is provided in each Digital Video Disk memory sector header to indicate the type of information contained in the main data portion of the frame. A vector of video clips are stored on the DVD disk and the DVD drive examines the bit to determine whether to play a movie or to employ logic provided by the present invention that allows the DVD drive to determine which included video clip to play instead. The video clips may include cartoons, commercials, movie previews, etc. and the logic employed by the DVD drive allows for random or specific selections to be played at predetermined times, such as displaying a clip during the flipping process of a dual-sided DVD disk. Additionally, the method and apparatus may be applied to DVD disks to determine whether commercials are played before, after or during the movie or the movie is played commercial free.

Abstract: An approach for managing a data package is provided. Network utilization is determined to exceed a threshold.A sender computer determines a hash digest of the data package by using a hash function selected based on central processing unit utilization.If the hash digest is in a sender hash table, then without sending the data package, the sender computer sends the hash digest and an index referring to the hash digest so that a recipient computer can use the index to locate a matching hash digest and the data package in a recipient hash table.If the hash digest is not in the sender hash table, then the sender computer adds the data package and the hash digest to the sender hash table and sends the data package and the hash digest to the second computer to check the integrity of the data package based on the hash digest.

Abstract: TU9-90-006 CALIBRATING OPTICAL DISK RECORDERS TO SOME PARAMETERS DURING DISK SPIN UP WHILE DEFERRING CALIBRATION OF OTHER PARAMETERS This disclosure deals with an optical disk recorder/player (drive) of the type that receives a removable disk for signal exchanging operations. Once a disk is inserted into the drive, the rotation of the disk begins a period of accelerating rotational speed called spin up. During spin up, the focus and tracking systems of the drive are calibrated. Once the disks reach a desired operating rotational speed, a menu is provided for determining when to calibrate a laser in the drive for recording operations. Such writing or recording calibration of the laser occurs at different times in accordance with the types of signal processing functions to be performed with respect to the particular disk. Description includes a media library in which a plurality of optical disk drives are controlled in a manner for minimizing access times to any optical disk within the media library.

Abstract: A method for selecting data storage media for demount in an automated storage library, and an automated storage library and program product therefor are disclosed. Preemptive demount of storage media is permitted when all peripheral storage devices in the library are occupied and one or more of such devices remains inactive for a predetermined time. Storage media may be demounted to service existing mount requests, provided the peripheral storage devices in which the media are mounted are inactive. There is also a need, however, to ensure the availability of an empty device to service future mount requests, particularly in libraries having only a single gripper mechanism. Thus, even when no mount requests are pending, the status of the peripheral storage devices is continually monitored. If the peripheral storage devices are all occupied, and one or more of such devices remains inactive for the predetermined time, the least recently used storage medium is demounted and transferred to a storage cell in the library.
