    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal-orienting agent capable of realizing a uniform liquid crystal orientation having a pre-tilted angle on a liquid crystal film in a one step irradiation process comprising the irradiation of linearly polarized UV light by adding a polymer having a specific rigid enol structure. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal-orienting agent contains a polymer which has repeating units each having a structure of formula I [R1 is a divalent organic group; P1 is a divalent organic group of formula II (T is a single bond or a 1-15C divalent organic group which may contain an O atom) or formula III; Q1 is a monovalent organic group containing an aromatic ring] and repeating units having a structure of formula IV (R2 is a trivalent organic group; Q2 is the same as Q1). The liquid crystal-orienting agent enables the realization of a uniform liquid crystal orientation having a pre-tilted angle in a one step irradiation process comprising the irradiation of linearly polarized UV light, and can form liquid crystal-orienting films capable of being utilized for liquid crystal display elements, or the like.
