SOLUTION: The composite film contains a polymer obtd. by reacting a polymer consisting essentially of repeating units represented by formula I with a compd. having a liq. crystal forming group represented by formula II and a liq. crystal. In the formula II, R is 3-20C alkylene and X is -CN or -OCH3 . A functional silane-contg. compd. or an epoxy group-contg. compd. may be added to a polymer soln. so as to improve adhesiveness to the surface of a substrate when the composite film is formed by coating the surface of the substrate with the soln. The composite film is suitably used as a liq. crystal orienting film capable of orienting liq. crystal molecules without carrying out rubbing. The composite film itself may be used as a liq. crystal compsn. so as to assemble a liq. crystal display device.
