PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer particle for bioassay or bioseparation, which specifically extracts a bioactive substance such as a targeted protein, peptide, nucleic acid or small molecule compound or which is used for immunodiagnosis, molecular biology study, screening of a pharmaceuticals-use candidate material or separation of a useful biomaterial. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liq. crystal orienting film having ability to orient liq. crystal molecules without rubbing by incorporating a polymer obtd. by reacting a specified polymer with a compd. having a liq. crystal forming group and a liq. crystal. SOLUTION: The composite film contains a polymer obtd. by reacting a polymer consisting essentially of repeating units represented by formula I with a compd. having a liq. crystal forming group represented by formula II and a liq. crystal. In the formula II, R is 3-20C alkylene and X is -CN or -OCH3 . A functional silane-contg. compd. or an epoxy group-contg. compd. may be added to a polymer soln. so as to improve adhesiveness to the surface of a substrate when the composite film is formed by coating the surface of the substrate with the soln. The composite film is suitably used as a liq. crystal orienting film capable of orienting liq. crystal molecules without carrying out rubbing. The composite film itself may be used as a liq. crystal compsn. so as to assemble a liq. crystal display device.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator capable of effectively dispersing a particle liquid of probe carrying particles after the contact and reaction with a specimen and a separation liquid to stirr them, without flocculating the probe carrying particles in the liquids and capable of surely separating the target substance in the specimen, and an automatic stirring system using the separator, and to provide a separation method that uses the separator and an automatic stirring method that uses the separator. SOLUTION: The separator is used for separating the target substance from the specimen, by making the probe carrying particles react with the target substance in the specimen and has at least a liquid housing part which houses the particles after the contact with the specimen and the separation liquid and has a filter, which selectrively passes a liquid from the particle-containing liquid, arranged to its bottom part and a vibrating part for making the particle-containing liquid housed in the liquid housing part vibrate. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide magnetic particles for diagnostic drugs which avoid optical absorption due to black or brown magnetic composite particles conventionally used for a diagnostic application using an optical detection system and achieve high-sensitivity measurement. SOLUTION: The magnetic particle for the diagnostic drugs includes a core containing the magnetic particle and a visible light diffusing layer formed outside the core, and has a L value of 50 or more in a Lab color system, residual magnetization of 30% or less of saturation magnetization and a particle diameter of 0.5-15 μm. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element, which can be provided with an excellent liquid crystal orienting function by means of a simple operation, requires no burning, possesses low residual voltage, and is provided with high display quality. SOLUTION: Using an orienting rubbing member including an orientation applying substance containing polymer provided with a liquid crystal orienting function, the surface of a liquid crystal display element substrate material is rubbed, so that the orienting substance is stuck on the surface so as to provide the liquid crystal orientation function. A liquid crystal display element is constructed of this liquid crystal display element substrate processed by this orienting method. The orienting rubbing material is constructed of a cloth in which the orientation applying substance containing polymer provided with a liquid crystal orienting function exists on the surface.
