    Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus of transmit diversity that is backward compatible and does not significantly degrade performance in additi ve white guassan noise (AWGN) conditions using a transmission architecture that incorporates a form of phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) referred to herein as biased PSTD. Biased PSTD involves transmitting a signal and a frequency swep t version of the same signal over diversity antennas at different power levels . By transmitting the two signals at different power levels, the depths of nulls normally seen in AWGN conditions when PSTD is utilized is reduced and performance degradation in AWGN conditions is mitigated.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for enhancing diversity gain without reducing data rate by increasing the number of antenna elements and configuring the antenna elements for improving signal-te-noise ratio at a receiver. The antenna array comprise a first antenna group with at least two antenna elements and a second antenna group with at least one antenna element. The first and second antenna groups are spaced approximately ten carrier wavelengths or more apart from each other, and the antenna elements belonging to the first antenna group are spaced approximately a half carrier wavelength or less apart from each other. A plurality of data streams is generated from a signal and used to produce a first and second plurality of representative data streams. Each of the first plurality of representative data streams is phase-shifted and encoded using different orthogonal codes, and each of the second plurality of representative data streams is encoded using different orthogonal codes, wherein a different orthogonal code is used to encode representative data streams in the first and second plurality of representative data streams generated from a same data stream, and the first and second plurality of representative data streams allow for the plurality of data streams to be recovered at a receiver after encoding. The encoded and phase shifted first plurality of representative data streams being transmitted over the first antenna group, and the encoded second plurality of representative data streams being transmitted over the second antenna group.

    Abstract: A method and system for adaptive signal processing for an antenna array reduces the requisite computations for executing an adaptive algorithm that combines or digitally filters baseband receive signals. The system receives uplink electromagnetic signals from a phased array and uplink electromagnetic signals from a diversity array during the reception of a desired electromagnetic signal transmitted by a desired mobile station. The uplink signals are converted into baseband signals for digital signal processing. The baseband signals are observable as a series of successive time slots. The system determines uplink coarse combining weights associated with the uplink baseband signals of the phased array and downlink coarse combining weights associated with the downlink baseband signals of the phased array. The baseband uplink signals are summed into as few as one resultant baseband signal during or after application of the coarse combining weights to the baseband uplink signals. The system determines fine combining weights for one or more resultant baseband signals and the baseband uplink signals on a symbol-by-symbol basis, or on any durational basis less than a time slot, to combine the signals into a single enhanced baseband signal for symbol detection.

    Abstract: A method and system for adaptive signal processing for an antenna array reduces the requisite computations for executing an adaptive algorithm that combines or digitally filters baseband receive signals.
