Abstract: Se describe una versión digital de la amplitud y la fase de una señal óptica recibida, que es desarrollada por el empleo de la detección diferencial directa en conjunto con el procesamiento de señales digitales. La señal es dividida en tres copias. Un perfil de intensidad es convencionalmente obtenido utilizando una de las copias. La información de fase es obtenida al suministrar cada copia remanente a uno respectivo de un par de interferómetros de retraso óptico que tienen desplazamientos de fase ortogonal, seguido por los detectores de intensidad balanceada, respectivos. La salida de cada uno de los detectores de intensidad balanceada, y el perfil de intensidad, son cada uno convertido para representaciones digitales respectivas. El procesamiento de señales es utilizado para desarrollar la información de fase a partir de las representaciones digitales de la salida del detector de intensidad balanceada.

Abstract: An optical receiver adapted to process an optical duobinary signal received over a transmission link in an optical communication system. In one embodiment, the receiver has an optical-to-electrical signal converter coupled to a decoder. The decoder processes an electrical signal generated by the converter to generate a bit sequence corresponding to the optical signal. To generate a bit value, the decoder integrates the electrical signal using a sampling window and compares the integration result with a decision threshold value. In one configuration, the width of the sampling window and the decision threshold value are selected based on the eye diagram and noise distribution function, respectively, corresponding to the optical signal. Advantageously, embodiments of the present invention improve overall back-to-back (i.e., source-to-destination) system performance, e.g., by improving dispersion tolerance and/or reducing optical power corresponding to a selected bit error rate value.

Abstract: Phase shift keying (PSK) or differential phase shift keying (DPSK) used as t he coding scheme in a high bit rate, long haul dispersion-managed optical transmission system, in which the signaling format is RZ. The system can combine multiple individual channels with different wavelengths in a WDM or dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) arrangement. Dispersion management can be provid ed using several techniques, such as by using dispersion managed solitons, quas i- linear transmission or conventional RZ transmission with pre-compensation and post- compensation.
