    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an aldehyde and alcohol having a relatively small number of carbon atoms selectively in high yield, by reacting CO with H2 in a hydrous liquid medium in the presence of a solid catalyst containing metallic cobalt, rhodium or iron and/or an alloy thereof. CONSTITUTION:CO is reacted with H2 in a liquid medium containing water in the presence of a cobalt, rhodium or iron solid catalyst, e.g. cobalt boride, to give a 2-6C saturated aliphatic aldehyde and 1-6C saturated aliphatic alcohol selectively. The liquid medium is water or a mixture of water with an organic solvent (preferably the content of the water is >=10%), and an alcohol, carboxylic acid etc. may be used as the organic solvent. The amount of the catalyst is 0.01-25wt%, and the reaction conditions are preferably 120-300 deg.C and 40-800kg/cm . EFFECT:The heat of reaction is easily removed and local superheating of the catalyst will not easily occur due to the large specific gravity of the aqueous medium and good dispersion of the catalyst.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain titled substance in high yield with suppressing the formation of by-products caused by dehydration of a fatty alcohol, by bringing an alpha-oxycarboxylic acid amide as a raw material into contact with the first solid acid catalyst, followed by bringing the reaction mixture and the fatty alcohol into contact with the second catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-oxycarboxylic acid amide such as alpha-oxybutyric acid amide, etc. shown by the formula (R1 and R2 are H or alkyl with the proviso that at least one is alkyl) is brought inot contact with the first solid acid catalyst preferably in the presence of water. The prepared reaction mixture and a fatty alcohol such as methyl alcohol, etc. are brought into contact with the second solid acid catalyst, to give the desired compound. Yttrium phosphate, etc. are cited especially preferably as the first solid acid catalyst, and zirconium phosphate, etc. are cited especially preferably as the second catalyst. The reaction temperature is especially preferably 200-450 deg.C.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, by oxidizing anthracene in the vapor phase with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, particularly molybdenum and/or vanadium oxides. CONSTITUTION:Anthracene (A) or an organic compond containing A, e.g. an anthracene fraction, is brought into contact with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas (G) in the presence of a vapor phase oxidation catalyst, e.g. molybdenum and/ or vanadium oxides at 300-650 deg.C to give the objective compound in a simple step efficiently without using expensive durene. The molar ratio of A to G is 1:100,000- 1:100.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound useful as an intermediate of heat-resistant resins, by contacting a pentaalkylbenzene, a hexa-alkylbenzene, and/or their derivatives, with oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a vapor-phase oxidation catalyst. CONSTITUTION:One or more compounds selected from the compounds of formulae I and II (R1-6 are 1-4C alkyl, halogenated alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, formylalkyl, caroxyalkyl, acetonyl, or acetyl) are brought into contact with an oxygen- containing gas (e.g. air) in the presence of a vapor-phase oxidation catalyst (e.g. vanadium oxide), to obtain pyromellitic anhydride. The molar ratio of the polyalkylbenzene to O2 is pref. 1 to 100-10,000, and the reaction temperature is 300- 650 deg.C. EFFECT:The objective compound can be prepared in high yield, by the direct, one- step reaction.
