    Abstract: A battery charger calculates the slope or rate of change of battery temperature and stores a peak rate of change value PK, which is updated as charging continues, 208. Charging is interrupted, 216, when the present rate of change of temperature RSnow has fallen from the currently stored peak value PK by at least a first threshold value, provided that the present battery temperature Tnow exceeds an initial or ambient temperature value To by at least a second threshold value. The battery temperature slope may be calculated by subtracting the sum of three consecutive old temperature measurements from the sum of the three most recent temperature measurements. This provides noise immunity and also allows use of a low cost analog/digital converter in a microprocessor (140, Fig. 1). The charger may be incorporated in a cellular radio telephone having a microprocessor which controls call processing and also controls battery charging. The battery may be charged at an intermediate rate (less than fast charge, greater than trickle charge) - eg. at a C/3 rate of 300mA.
