Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for detecting a safe time even when power is supplied to an SIM card in communication equipment. SOLUTION: A method for protecting a circuit module in communication equipment includes a step for judging whether the circuit module exists in the equipment or not. In the next step, a power source voltage concerning the equipment is measured. The power source voltage is compared with a prescribed threshold voltage in the succeeding step. When the power source voltage is lower than the threshold, a normal function is given to a telephone set in the next step to return to the comparison step. When the power source voltage is higher than the threshold, connection to the SIM card is cut off in the succeeding step to limit the function of communication equipment.

Abstract: An apparatus (304) for scanning among a plurality of channels in a radio communication system (300) includes receive circuitry (310) and control circuitry (312). The receive circuitry (310) is capable of being tuned to any one of the plurality of channels and measures reception strength of the tuned channel. The control circuitry (312) controls the receive circuitry (310) to scan through all of the plurality of channels one at a time. The control circuitry (312) stores a first reading of a measured reception strength of the tuned channel before powering off the receive circuitry (310). The control circuitry (312) stores a second reading of a measured reception strength of the tuned channel after powering the receive circuitry (310) back on.

Abstract: A circuit (103) for charging a battery (101) is connected to an input (126) for inputting a signal indicative of a temperature of the battery. A switch (108) selectively supplies power to the battery under the control of a control signal. A microcontroller (140) calculates a rate of change of the temperature signal and stores a peak rate of change during a battery charging interval. The microcontroller is operable to control the switch to disable charging of the battery when the temperature rate of change drops below the peak value by a rate of change threshold amount.

Abstract: A radio frequency receiver (300) typically contains electronic devices commonly used in amplifying or mixing circuits (315), (339), the non-ideal characteristics of which lead to intermodulation (IM) distortion. A measurement of the amplitude of the received signal (301) is taken both unattenuated and attenuated. The difference between the two measurements is compared to predetermined limits wherein the received signal (301) is determined to be valid, invalid or unsure. A valid received signal is demodulated in the receiver (300). An invalid signal, confirming the presence of IM distortion, is rejected. The unsure signal may be rejected or demodulated as determined by the receiver designer. This type of signal characterization is particularly useful for cellular radiotelephones attempting to gain access to the system provider in which it is registered.

Abstract: A method of protecting a SIM card in a mobile phone from excess voltage comprises the steps of detecting whether a SIM card is present in the phone, measuring a supply voltage to the phone and comparing it to a predetermined threshold voltage. When the supply voltage is below the threshold, normal functionality is supplied to the phone. When the supply voltage is above the threshold a connection to the SIM card is powered down to limit functionality of the phone. Voltage comparison can be periodically checked to see if the SIM card is still present. On initial power up the phone checks for the presence of batteries and if not present the SIM (if present) is powered down. A voltage above the threshold indicates that an external charger is present.

Abstract: An electronic device (100) includes at least L keys (114) and a processor (506) having at least M inputs (600). Upon actuation, each one of the at least L keys (114) toggles a unique combination of N inputs of the at least M inputs (600), where each unique combination is taken from all possible combinations thereof. The at least M inputs (600) are read by the processor (506) and compared to a plurality of predetermined key patterns (806). Upon a match between the at least M inputs (600) and one of the plurality of predetermined key patterns (806), a key actuation is detected and a predetermined function may be processed in response thereto. The processor (506) may ignore simultaneous key actuations where combinations of inputs greater than N are toggled.

Abstract: A radio frequency receiver (300) typically contains electronic devices commonly used in amplifying or mixing circuits (315) which are seldom ideal. The non-ideal characteristics of these devices lead to intermodulation (IM) distortion. A measurement of the amplitude of the received signal (301) is taken both unattenuated (503) and attenuated (507). The difference between the two measurements is compared (511) to predetermined limits (L1, L2 or L3) wherein the received signal (310) is determined to be valid, invalid or unsure. A valid received signal is demodulated in the receiver (300). An invalid signal, confirming the presence of IM distortion, is rejected. The unsure signal may be rejected or demodulated as determined by the receiver designer. This type of signal characterization is particularly useful for cellular radiotelephones (101) attempting to gain access to the system provider (111) in which it is registered.

Abstract: A multiple frequency band receiver (102) receives at least two frequency bands that are close but not adjacent. A first bandpass filter (304) passes signals in the first frequency band. A second bandpass filter (306) passes signals in the second frequency band. The first and second filters each attenuate signals between the first and second frequency band to at least a first level so as to provide selectivity in the frequency range between the first and second frequencies to prevent the signals between these frequency bands from being further processed by the communication device. A third filter (322) coupled to first and second filters passes signals in both the first and second frequency band and attenuates signals above the pass band of the higher of the first and second filters and below the lower of the first and second filters.
