Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of a power amplifier used in a wireless communication device. SOLUTION: Load impedance at the output of a power amplifier 304 is modified by a voltage variable capacitor (VVC) 310 to maximize the efficiency of the power amplifier. A comparator 509 generates an amplifier control signal 211 based upon a detected power output signal 216 and a reference signal. In addition to providing power control, the control signal is also coupled to a VVC circuit 506 to control the output impedance of the power amplifier. In an alternate embodiment, a separate VVC control signal 527 can be coupled to the VVC. The second VVC is coupled in parallel to the first VVC. Otherwise, the VVC circuit 506 is incorporated at the input of the power amplifier to compensate for variations in input impedance to improve other power amplifier parameters such as IM, gain, output power and noise level. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate a communication equipment for a plurality of frequency bands such as GSM 900MHz and DCS 1800MHz or the like by eliminating the need for a mixer for each frequency band. SOLUTION: In a radio telephone set of dual band GSM/DCS 1800, a frequency injected to a local oscillator 228 for both bands is given from synthesizer filters 222, 422 to a mixer 234. Thus, a duplex and matching condition to a mixer input is simplified and a signal loss is minimized. A common output port of a GSM RX/LO synthesizer filter and a DCS RX/LO synthesizer filter is duplexed to the mixer input. Moreover, In the input impedance matching to the mixer 234, impedance matches a reception signal at each band and RF is trapped at an intermediate frequency. In an output matching of the mixer 234, it is designed that the impedance of the IF filter matches and a low impedance is provided to an RF input frequency.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transmit the communication signals via plural bands while minimizing increase of the number of component elements by changing the base-emitter capacitance to make an amplifier function as an oscillator via a proper band and also containing a node that receives the band selector voltage to change the capacitance of a resonator for change of the resonance frequency of the oscillator. SOLUTION: A transistor TR 302 which produces a resonance output signal includes a base, a collector and an emitter. A 1st inductor 304 and a 1st capacitor are connected to the base of the TR 302. A 1st control node is connected to receive the band selector voltage that connects a 2nd capacitor to the base and the emitter of the TR 302 to change the band of the output signal. Then a 2nd control node is connected to receive the band selector voltage to connect the emitter of the TR 302 to a 3rd capacitor 322 for change of the resonance output signal.

Abstract: A transmitter vco includes nodes for receiving a band selector voltage for altering the base-emitter capacitance of a transistor to enable the vco to act as an oscillator in the appropriate band and for altering the resonator capacitance to change the resonant frequency of the oscillator and to enable oscillation in different frequency bands for dual mode communication devices e.g. radiotelephones. The base emitter circuit includes a resonant circuit formed by a capacitor 306 and a stripline inductor 304. Frequency band of operation may be changed by applying a band selector voltage to bias a diode 308 on and to connect a capacitor 310 across the capacitor 306. Application of the band selector voltage may also connect a series combination of capacitor 322 and a varactor 327 in parallel across a combination of a capacitor 324 and a varactor 328 in the emitter path. A cellular telephone including the voltage controlled oscillator is described with regard to figure 1 (not shown).

Abstract: An exciter matching circuit (125), interstage matching circuit (134), and harmonic filter matching circuit (140) match impedances at the input to a two-stage power amplifier (130), between the first stage (132) and the second stage (136) of the power amplifier (130), and at the output of the power amplifier (130) for more than one frequency band of interest. In a GSM/DCS dual band radiotelephone (101), the matching circuits (125,134, 140) provide low return loss at 900 MHz when the dual band transmitter (110) is operating in the GSM mode. The harmonic filter matching circuit (140) also filters out signals at 1800 MHz, 2700 MHz, and high order harmonics. When the dual band transmitter (110) is in DCS mode, however, the matching circuits (125, 134, 140) provide a low return loss at 1800 MHz and filter out signals at 2700 MHz and harmonics of 1800 MHz.
