    Abstract: A communication method for transmitting data over a radio link of a communication system. The method includes a first communication unit that codes data to be transmitted, interleaves the coded data and then transmits the interleaved coded data. A second data communication unit then decodes the only partially received interleaved coded data. When sufficient data has been decoded from the so far received data, the second unit sends a confirmation signal to the first unit, the first unit responding to the confirmation signal by ceasing transmission of the interleaved coded data. Further data may then be transmitted because the transmission of the first data has stopped. Preferably, the data transmitted in bursts, with a time gap between bursts. The communication system is preferably a mobile radio communication system with the first or second unit being a base station, the other unit being a mobile station. The system may also be one of, or a combination of: UMTS, GPRS, EGPRS. The system preferably supports a plurality of coding rates and the coded data includes coding rate identification data which may be transmitted in the first burst.

    Abstract: A transmitter 100 for transmitting radio signals to a receiver comprises a data generator 101 which generates a plurality of groups of information data. A radio condition processor 107 determines a radio environment characteristic, such as a propagation channel path loss or an interference level. A subset processor 103 generates a data message by selecting a subset of the plurality of groups of information data in response to the radio environment characteristic. The data message is then transmitted by a transmit unit 107. The invention may provide flexible and efficient discontinuous transmission operation which may be particularly suitable for discontinuous transmission of control data. The invention may for example reduce interference in cellular communication systems.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method of generating downlink power information for a multi-sector base transceiver site in which power can be shared between existing amplifiers includes a first step of gathering (S 10 ) downlink power information for each sector. When the total power required by the sectors is less than the total power available from the base transceiver site, a next step includes modifying (S 20 ) the information to pre-empt traffic loading such that a more heavily loaded sector will be disproportionately allocated more power than a less heavily loaded sector. A next step includes forwarding (S 30 , S 40 ) the information to controllers of the base transceiver site. A next step includes determining a loading of each sector using thresholds to determine an overload in sectors depending on the information, wherein the power to each sector is adjusted disproportional to the degree with which the sector is loaded.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for transmitting data in a radio communication system. The apparatus comprises a data segmenter (203) segmenting data into data segments. The data segments are fed to a transmission encoder (205) which encodes the data segments into transmission blocks in accordance with a transmission scheme selected from a transmission protocol comprising of a plurality of transmission schemes having different energy per information bit levels. The transmission blocks are transmitter by a transmitter (211) and feedback information is received from the remote radio station (216) by a receiver (217). An analysis processor (219) determines an analysis group of data segments such that the analysis group comprises at least two data segments having transmission blocks encoded with different energy per information bit levels. The analysis processor (219) further generates a performance distribution measure relating to the analysis group in response to the feedback information. The apparatus further comprise a transmission controller (207) which, together with the transmission encoder (205), selects transmission scheme to apply to subsequent data segments in response to the performance distribution measure.

    Abstract: System control logic (132) operates such that stationary (or slow moving) subscriber units (110, 111, 113, 114) are assigned to time-slots 0, 1 and 7 in a time division multiplex pico cellular-type communication system (100). Relatively fast moving mobile units (112) will be placed in time-slots 2-6. Moreover, time-slots 0, 1 and 7 are preferably left vacant, system loading permitting, with intra-cell handoff between time-slot channel resources actioned to ensure (preferably) non-utilisation of time-slots 0, 1 and 7. In the event that deemed stationary subscriber units are allocated to time-slots 0, 1 and 7 (or any time-slot for that matter), then uplink measurements therefrom are reduced. In this way, non-continuous downlink systems avoid excessive re-tuning of transceiver equipment required to monitor uplink traffic in adjacent cells, especially when such re-tuning is detrimental to monitoring of broadcast control channel (BCCH) information allocated, for example, to time-slot zero of a dedicated BCCH carrier.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method of intelligent placement of packet users for resource allocation, wherein a set T of time slots is defined which are preferably selected in the event of a slot theft. Short lived packet users are then placed in said time slots of set T. A short lived packet user can be determined by monitoring the amount of data they have waiting in the buffer for transmission and the rate at which they have new data added to the buffer. Advantageously, defining a set of slots more likely to be stolen and placing within them those packet users that are likely to soon end their connection reduces the overall impact of slot theft on the current packet users. The system may be applied in allocating slots in a radio base station handling speech and packet data.

    Abstract: A method of selecting a downlink transmit diversity technique (DTDT) from amongst a plurality of techniques for communication with a mobile station, characterised by the step of determining at least a first estimated value of a link characteristic and a radio network controller (RNC) arranged to carry out the method. The performance of a particular transmit diversity technique can be dependent on channel conditions and any additional enhancements used in the system. For example, in UMTS, the basic diversity techniques are the open loop (OL) technique and the two closed loop techniques, closed loop mode 1 (CL1) and closed loop mode 2 (CL2) and the standard enhancement is high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA). HSDPA does not work well with the open loop technique but does work well with some closed loop techniques, e.g. CL1. In addition, the speed of mobile movement can affect a link condition and it is found that at high, medium and low speeds, the best performers are respectively, open loop(OL), closed loop mode 1 (CL1) and closed loop mode 2 (CL2). The invention thus enables the selection of the most appropriate diversity technique. In one embodiment, mobile speed can be presumed by identifying a mobility designation given to the active cells of the mobile, i.e. the mobility designation given according to the location of the cell, e.g. urban, suburban or rural. Open loop techniques include space time transmit diversity (STTD), orthogonal transmit diversity (OTD), delay diversity, time switch transmit diversity (TSTD), phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) and some multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques and closed loop techniques include selection transmit diversity (STD), transmit adaptive array (TxAA) and closed loop MIMO schemes.
