Abstract:
A mechanism for notifying a mobile station of receipt of a packet-switched paging message in a GSM communication system. A base station controller (108) sends the packet-switched paging message to the mobile station (116) along a main dedicated control channel in response to the mobile station being capable of operating in a dual transfer mode and being currently engaged in circuit-switch voice interchange activity, resulting in a simultaneous voice and data transmission in dual transfer mode.

Abstract:
A radiotelephone device receiving network information, transmitted along a radio channel, from a network includes an acknowledgement coordination module determining a mode for exchange of acknowledgement information with the network. The radiotelephone device transmits the acknowledgement information to the network through a main dedicated control channel, using a defined service access point identifier corresponding to transmission of the acknowledgement information through the main dedicated control channel, in response to the mode for exchange of acknowledgement information being the main dedicated control channel. The radiotelephone device transmits the acknowledgement information to the network using a temporary block flow acknowledgement interchange in response to the mode for exchange of acknowledgement information being other than the main dedicated control channel.
Abstract:
A method for a radiotelephone to scan for service in a radiotelephone system having a plurality of carriers within a corresponding geographic area includes establishing (202) a list of a predetermined number of carriers having the strongest signal strengths from cells proximate to the cell where the radiotelephone is camped. A next step includes determining (206) those proximate carriers from the list that are unsuitable for reselection by the radiotelephone. A next step includes scanning (208) for other suitable carriers within the area to substitute for those unsuitable carriers found in the determining step. A next step includes modifying (212) the list to include those suitable carriers found in the scanning step.
Abstract:
A method for allowing a radiotelephone to scan for alternate radiotelephone systems, where each cellular radiotelephone system is within a corresponding geographic area and each cell has a base station providing paging and voice communication, includes a first step of registering the radiotelephone on a radiotelephone system. A next step includes establishing whether alternate technology scanning has been enabled for the radiotelephone. If alternate technology scanning is disabled, the radiotelephone receives paging messages from the base station and acknowledges the paging messages addressed to the radiotelephone. If alternate technology scanning is enabled, the radiotelephone scans for an alternate technology while the base station repeats any paging messages addressed to the radiotelephone and ignores a lack of acknowledgement from the radiotelephone for paging messages addressed to the radiotelephone.

Abstract:
A method for sending acknowledged transport data between a mobile station (202) and a base station system (208) in a GPRS system (200) in which a protocol control unit (214) counts the number of data blocks in an acknowledgement message sent by the mobile station in response to a data packet transmission. A heuristic is then defined, based on the number of data blocks counted, and the number of corresponding data blocks corresponding to a subsequent data packet transmission is compared with the heuristic to determine that a virtual acknowledgement channel is being requested when the number of corresponding data blocks in the subsequent packet data transmission is less than the heuristic.
Abstract:
A mechanism for notifying a mobile station operating in a packet-switched data interchange activity of receipt of a circuit-switched paging message in a GSM communication system. A radio link control/medium access control block is sent to a mobile station by being inserted in a packet data channel, corresponding to the packet-switched data interchange activity, in response to the mobile station being capable of operating in a dual transfer mode (310) and being currently engaged in packet-switched data interchange activity (330). The mobile station aborts the packet-switched data interchange activity, and monitors a combined control channel setting up for circuit-switched voice interchange activity containing simultaneous voice and data transmission, resulting in a simultaneous voice and data transmission in dual transfer mode (350).
