    Abstract: A retractable antenna assembly (206; 900) provides a substantially matched antenna impedance to a matching circuit (712) of a radiotelephone (200) whether the retractable antenna assembly is in the extended position or the retracted position. In one embodiment parts (304,312) of a capacitor (714) are integrally formed on an upper portion of the retractable antenna assembly (206) such that when in the retracted position the capacitor (714) contributes to the overall antenna impedance. In another embodiment a capacitor (1302) is integrally formed on the lower portion of the retractable antenna assembly (900).

    Abstract: A retractable antenna assembly 206 for a radio telephone provides a matched antenna impedance to a circuit in both extended and retracted positions. The antenna comprises a helical element 302 which is in direct electrical contact with the linear element. Parts of a capacitor 304, 312 are formed integrally on the linear portion of the antenna such that when the antenna is in a retracted position the capacitor contributes to the overall antenna impedance. The antenna may be housed in a grounded conductive sheath when in a retracted position. The use of a ground plane is also disclosed.

The antenna assembly included an antenna conductor (542 Fig 8 not shown) and a flexible ground member (54 Fig 8), the ground member positioned between the antenna conductor and the radio frequency circuitry when the first and second housing portions are in the collapsed position. This avoids adverse effects on the collapsed antenna performance for a standy mode of operation.
