    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of a power amplifier used in a wireless communication device. SOLUTION: Load impedance at the output of a power amplifier 304 is modified by a voltage variable capacitor (VVC) 310 to maximize the efficiency of the power amplifier. A comparator 509 generates an amplifier control signal 211 based upon a detected power output signal 216 and a reference signal. In addition to providing power control, the control signal is also coupled to a VVC circuit 506 to control the output impedance of the power amplifier. In an alternate embodiment, a separate VVC control signal 527 can be coupled to the VVC. The second VVC is coupled in parallel to the first VVC. Otherwise, the VVC circuit 506 is incorporated at the input of the power amplifier to compensate for variations in input impedance to improve other power amplifier parameters such as IM, gain, output power and noise level.     Abstract: A retractable antenna assembly 206 for a radio telephone provides a matched antenna impedance to a circuit in both extended and retracted positions. The antenna comprises a helical element 302 which is in direct electrical contact with the linear element. Parts of a capacitor 304, 312 are formed integrally on the linear portion of the antenna such that when the antenna is in a retracted position the capacitor contributes to the overall antenna impedance. The antenna may be housed in a grounded conductive sheath when in a retracted position. The use of a ground plane is also disclosed.

    Abstract: An antenna arrangement (402) for a wireless communication device (400) comprises a first element (404) and a second element (406). The first element (404) is coupled to circuitry (408) of the wireless communication device (400). The second element (406) is movable between a first position (see Fig. 4) and a second position (see Fig. 5) relative to the first element (404). The second element (406) is capacitively coupled to the first element (404) when the second element (406) is moved to the first position and inductively coupled to the first element (404) when the second element (406) is moved to the second position. Further, a variable reactant tuner (505), operatively coupled to the antenna element (406), variably tunes the reactance of the antenna element (406) when the antenna element (406) is moved between the first position and the second position.
