Abstract:
The invention provides a system and method for testing signal transmission quality within a digital communication system and may be incorporated within a digital cellular communication system in which information is exchanged over spread spectrum communication channels. A test sequence of digital data transmitted over the communication channel is received at a receiving station, within which is also generated a replica of the test sequence of digital data. The accuracy of transmission over the communication channel is then determined by comparing the replica of the test sequence of digital data to the test sequence of data received over the communication channel. The invention allows the test sequence of digital data to be transmitted at one of a set of known data rates, with the received station being disposed to identify the data rate associated with each test sequence of digital data. In order to simulate the transmission of, for example, voice data, the system may be configured such that each test sequence of digital data is generated in accordance with a pseudorandom process.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing a reliable means to perform handoff from a code division multiple access (CDMA) system using a pilot signal to an alternative access technique system. Simple pilot box circuitry (350) is added to a set of border base stations (C2A - C2R). The border base stations (C2A C2R) are base stations which operate only in the alternative access technique and which have coverage areas which are contiguous with coverage areas of CDMA operation base stations. The mobile unit monitors for the pilot signal from the border base stations (C2A - C2R) in the same manner as it monitors for pilot signals from the CDMA operation base stations (C1A - C1s). When the mobile unit detects the pilot signal corresponding to a border base station (C2A - C2R), it notifies a system controller (202) in accordance with standard operation. The system controller (202) is aware that the pilot signal corresponds to a border base station (C2A - C2R) and thus triggers a hard handoff process to the alternative access technique system in response thereto.

Abstract:
A method of invoking and canceling voice and data service between a mobile unit and a base station. Using a standard telephone system, the connection for a voice service and a data service is the same. With the introduction of the digital wireless link, the voice connection and the data connection are different. Therefore new dialing commands which indicate the intent of the connection are created. These commands can also be used to designate the intent of the call from a mobile unit capable of data and voice service but not capable of simultaneous voice and data service. They can also be used to invoke simultaneous voice and data services.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for improving searching in a remote unit of a slotted mode, wireless, communication system. In a slotted mode communication system, the remote unit enters an "active state" during its assigned slot. While in the active state, a controller in the remote unit passes selected sets of search parameters to a search engine. The order that the searches are performed is based on the measured signal strength and the age of the measurement. The search engine performs searches using the selected sets of search parameters. Searching continues as long as the remote unit is in the active state. When the remote unit enters the inactive state, searching ceases. While in the inactive stage, the controller evaluates the results of the searches performed during the previous active state. During the next active state, the next sequence of searching is performed based on measured signal strength and the measurement age corresponding to the measurements made during the previous active state.
Abstract:
A method of and an apparatus for reduc-ing the average power consumption in a remote unit in a wireless communication system. When a remote unit in a slotted mode communication system enters an ac-tive state, it receives a sequence of messages. One ele-ment of this sequence is a general paging message that command the remote unit to return to the inactive state immediately, thus conserving battery power. The gen-eral paging message is followed by several additional el-ements in the sequence. When the remote unit operates in a poor signal-to-noise ratio environment, for example, it may not receive the general paging message and may, thus, unnecessarily remain in the active state until the end of its assigned slot, wasting battery power. The invention determines whether the element received by the remote unit is a general paging message. If so, the remote unit enters the inactive mode. If not, the invention determines whether the element occurs after a general paging mes-sage in the sequence of messages. If so, the remote unit enters the inactive mode without waiting for the end of the assigned slot.
Abstract:
LA INVENCION SUMINISTRA UN SISTEMA Y UN METODO PARA COMPROBAR LA CALIDAD DE TRANSMISION DE LAS SEÑALES DENTRO DE UN SISTEMA DE COMUNICACIONES DIGITALES Y PUEDE INCORPORARSE DENTRO DE UN SISTEMA DE COMUNICACIONES DIGITALES, CELULARES EN EL CUAL LA INFORMACION ES INTERCAMBIADA SOBRE CANALES DE COMUNICACION DE ESPECTRO EXTENDIDO. UNA SECUENCIA DE PRUEBA DE LOS DATOS DIGITALES TRANSMITIDOS SOBRE EL CANAL DE COMUNICACION ES RECIBIDA EN LA ESTACION RECEPTORA, DENTRO DE LA CUAL TAMBIEN SE GENERA UNA REPLICA DE LA SECUENCIA DE PRUEBA DE LOS DATOS DIGITALES. ENTONCES SE DETERMINA LA EXACTITUD DE LA TRANSMISION SOBRE EL CANAL DE COMUNICACIONES COMPARANDO LA REPLICA DE LA SECUENCIA DE PRUEBA DE LOS DATOS DIGITALES CON LA SECUENCIA DE PRUEBA DE LOS DATOS RECIBIDOS SOBRE EL CANAL DE COMUNICACIONES. LA INVENCION PERMITE QUE LA SECUENCIA DE PRUEBA DE LOS DATOS DIGITALES SEA TRANSMITIDA A UNA DE UN CONJUNTO DE VELOCIDADES CONOCIDAS, ESTANDO DISPUESTA LA ESTACION RECEPTORA PARA IDENTIFICAR LA VELOCIDAD DE LOS DATOS ASOCIADA CON CADA SECUENCIA DE PRUEBA DE DATOS DIGITALES. PARA SIMULAR LA TRANSMISION DE, POR EJEMPLO, DATOS DE VOZ, EL SISTEMA PUEDA CONFIGURARSE DE MANERA QUE LA SECUENCIA DE PRUEBA DE DATOS DIGITALES SE GENERE DE ACUERDO CON UN PROCESO PSEUDO-ALEATORIO.
