PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a wake-up mode of a wireless terminal when roaming from one wireless network to another wireless network.SOLUTION: A method for controlling a wireless terminal operating in a hibernation cycle alternating between a wake mode and a hibernation mode includes communicating with a first wireless network during a first waking period having a first duration, and with a second wireless network during a second waking period following the first waking period. The second waking period is extended to a second duration, greater than the first duration, responsively to detecting that the second wireless network is different from the first wireless network. Network information relating to the second wireless network is received during the second waking period.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for achieving hand-off in a hybrid communication network. SOLUTION: A method of effecting the hand-off of a mobile station from a first base station in a first cellular communication system 46 controlled by a first mobile switching control station to a second base station in a second different cellular system 48 controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises a step for measuring, at the mobile station, a parameter of a signal transmitted by the first base station and a parameter of a signal transmitted by the second base station. When the parameters reach a predetermined condition, a signal quality message is made to communicate from the mobile station via the first base station to the first mobile switching control station. The first mobile switching control station generates information for a channel request message for the second mobile switching control station and transmitting the information to the mobile station. SOLUTION: A method of effecting handoff of a mobile station from a first base station in a first cellular communications system 46 controlled by a first mobile switching control station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system 48 controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method includes measuring, at the mobile station, a parameter of a signal transmitted by the first base station and a parameter of a signal transmitted by the second base station. When the parameters reach a predetermined condition, a signal quality message is communicated from the mobile station via the first base station to the first mobile switching control station. The first mobile switching control station responds by generating information for a channel request message for the second mobile switching control station and transmitting the information to the mobile station. SOLUTION: The communications network and method for applying over the air service programming to a mobile station (2), where the mobile station transmits a service programming request to a communications network, which results in the mobile station (2) being connected to a customer service center (26). The customer service center (26) queries the user of mobile station (2) for information in response to which the customer service center (26) selects a home location register (18) and an authentication center (22) within the communication network with which the mobile station (2) is to be associated. Service programming information associated with the mobile station (2) is transferred from the home location register (18) and/or the authentication center (22) into mobile station (2). Se proporcionan m?dulos de identidad de usuario (UIMs) para que las aplicaciones de servicio de red residentes en el dispositivo inal?mbrico se asocien con un perfil de aplicaci?n correspondiente dentro del UIM. A method and apparatus for messaging traffic, including air and network messaging, in a wireless communication system. The invention informs a mobile station of its subscription status, either active or inactive, within the communication system. If the mobile station subscription status is inactive, the mobile station is prevented from registering with the communication system. All other functions of the inactive mobile remain enabled, such as the ability to make emergency calls, to change the subscription status to active status, or to allow for base station maintenance control.

Se describe un método para autenticar una estación móvil desde una primera estación base en un primer sistema celular de comunicaciones controlado por una primera estación para el control de la comunicación, móvil, a una segunda estación base en un segundo sistema celular, diferente, controlado por una segunda estación para el control de la conmutación, móvil. El método comprende generar en el segundo sistema celular de comunicaciones un código de autenticación como resultado de la aplicación de un algoritmo a una clave privada asignada a la estación móvil para el segundo sistema celular de comunicaciones y a un número aleatorio generado por el segundo sistema celular de comunicaciones. También es generado un código de autenticación en el primer sistema celular de comunicaciones como resultado de la aplicación de un algoritmo a la clave privada y al número aleatorio. El código de autenticación generado en el primer sistema celular de comunicaciones es seguidamente transmitido a una estación móvil en un paquete de datos, y, desde el mismo, el código de autenticación es transmitido al segundo sistema celular de comunicaciones. El código de autenticación generado en el primer sistema celular de comunicaciones es entonces comparado con el código de autenticación generado en el segundo sistema celular de comunicaciones.

A method of authenticating a mobile station (18) from a first base station (12) in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control station (10) to a second base station (14) in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises generating at the second cellular communication system an authentication code as the result of applying an algorithm to a private key assigned to the mobile station for the second cellular communications system and a random number generated by the second cellular communications system. An authentication code is also generated at the first cellular communication system as the result of applying an algorithm to the private key and the random number. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communication system is then transmitted to a mobile station in a data packet, and, from there, the authentication code is transmitted to the second cellular communication system. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communications system is then compared with the authentication code generated at the second cellular communications system.
