Abstract: Un sistema de comunicación celular en el cual un usuario (16, 18) del sistema y n usuarios adicionales (16, 18) del sistema están cada uno en comunicación con otros usuarios respectivos mediante señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información, transmitidas mediante una sede celular (12, 14), en el cual: el usuario (16, 18) del sistema comprende un transmisor (84) para transmitir señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información a dicha sede celular (12, 14), un receptor (72, 74) para recibir señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información desde dicha sede celular (12, 14), y un medio para medir la calidad de la señal en dichas señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información recibidas por el usuario del sistema; la sede celular (12, 14) comprende un transmisor (62) para transmitir señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información a dicho usuario del sistema, un receptor (54, 56) para recibir señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información desde dicho usuario (16, 18) del sistema, y un medio (63) de ajuste para ajustar la potencia de las señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información transmitidas desde la sede celular (12, 14); se proporciona un medio (10) de control de potencia para controlar la potencia de transmisión de las señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información, midiendo la potencia de la señal en las señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información recibidas por el usuario (16, 18) del sistema y transmitiendo los datos que representan la potencia medida a la sede celular (12, 14), mediante las señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información, siendo el medio (63) de ajuste sensible a los datos en las señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información del usuario (16, 18) del sistema, para ajustar la potencia en las señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información transmitidas por la sede celular (12, 14), y en donde el medio (10) de control de potencia está dispuesto para aumentar el nivel de potencia en una de dichas señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información, transmitidas por la sede celular (12, 14) a un usuario (16, 18) del sistema en respuesta a datos que representan la calidad de una señal modulada de espectro ensanchado portadora de información, medida en dicho usuario del sistema, y para disminuir el nivel de potencia en dichas señales moduladas de espectro ensanchado portadoras de información, transmitidas por la sede celular (12, 14) a los otros n usuarios (16, 18) del sistema.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for negotiating service configuration in a digital co mmunication system is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, the service negotiation system is implemented in a wireless spre ad spectrum communication system. The service configurat ion comprises data rates, frame formats and types of services. Types of service may include speech encoding, facsimile or digital data s ervices. Further described herein is a digital transmitter and receiver using the ser vice negotiation system to provide service configuration mutually acceptable at both ends of a communication link. An apparatus for transmitti ng a service negotiation message is described comprising service negotiator (20) for providing a message indicative of a requested se rvice configuration, and transmitter (26) for transmitti ng the service request message. Also, described is a system for receiving a service negotiation message comprising receiver (34) for receiv ing a transmitted message indicative of a requested service configuration, and a service negotiator (40) for determining in accordance w ith a predetermined set of parameters a response message to the request message.

Abstract: In a method for negotiating service configuration in a communication system having at least one dedicated channel which is not shared by communication devices in the communication system, a request message indicative of a proposed service configuration is generated in a service negotiator (20). The request message is multiplexed, in a multiplexer (22) coupled to the negotiator (20), with an information data signal to produce a multiplexed signal. The multiplexed signal is encoded in an encoder (24) interposed between the multiplexer (22) and a transmitter (26) in accordance with a service configuration selected by the service negotiator (20). The multiplexed and encoded signal is transmitted by the transmitter (26) over the dedicated channel. Received signals are decoded a decoder (16) interposed between a receiver (14) and a demultiplexer (18). A response message indicative of a response to the proposed service configuration is received by the receiver (14). A determination is made by the service negotiator (20) whether the response message is indicative of a mutually acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal in accordance with the proposed service configuration if the response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal with a universal default service configuration if the response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.

Abstract: In a receiver having a plurality of demodulation elements, a method of assigning the plurality of demodulation element so a set of available signals. A first method emphasizes diversity of transmitting devices so that power control is optimal. A second method emphasizes the maximum signal strength available to produce aggregate maximum signal strength. Both methods control the number of reassignments so that excessive data is not lost during the reassignment process. The apparatus comprises the plurality of demodulation elements, at least one searcher element, and a controller.

Upon successful acquisition, a system determination processor examines the received system identification information and compares it with system identification information stored in a universal system table to determine the geographical region of the identified communication system. The system determination processor then determines whether the acquired system is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region. If it is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the system determination processor selects the acquired system for providing service. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station attempts to acquire a more desirable system using information from the universal system table.

Abstract: A power control system for a cellular mobile telephone system in which system users communicate information sig- nals between one another via at least one cell-site using code division multiple access spread spectrum communication sig- nals. The power control system controls transmission signal power for each cellular mobile telephone (16, 18) in the cellu- lar mobile telephone system wherein each cellular mobile telephone (16, 18) has an antenna, transmitter and receiver and each cell-site (12, 14) also has an antenna, transmitter and receiver. Cell-site transmitted signal power is measured as received at the mobile unit. Transmitter power is adjusted at the mobile unit in an opposite manner with respect to in- creases and decreases in received signal power. A power con- trol feedback scheme may also be utilized. At the cell-site communicating with the mobile unit, the mobile unit trans- mitted power is measured as received at the cell-site. A com- mand signal is generated at the cell-site and transmitted to the mobile unit for further adjusting mobile unit transmitter power corresponding to deviations in the cell-site received signal power. The feedback scheme is used to further adjust the mobile unit transmitter power corresponding to devia- tions in the cell-site received signal power. The feedback scheme is used to further adjust the mobile unit transmitter power so that mobile unit transmitted signals arrive at the cell-site at a desired power level. In a cell diversity situation, the mobile units transmitter power is adjusted to prevent un- necessary increases in mobile unit transmitter power level.
