Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for selecting a communication system best suited to the user's needs. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for selecting a communication system in accordance with the geographic region in which the subscriber station is located. Upon successful acquisition, the subscriber station examines the received system identification information to determine its geographical region. The subscriber station then determines whether or not the acquired system is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region. If it is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station provides service using the acquired system. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station attempts to acquire a more desirable system. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for negotiating service configuration in a digital communication system is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment the service negotiation system is implemented in a wireless spread spectrum communication system. The service configuration comprises data rates, frame formats and types of services. Types of service may include speech encoding, facsimile or digital data services. Further described herein is a digital transmitter and receiver using the service negotiation system to provide service configuration mutually acceptable at both ends of a communication link.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for selecting a communication system in accordance with the geographic region in which the subscriber station is located is described. Upon successful acquisition, a system determination processor examines the received system identification information and compares it with system identification information stored in a universal system table to determine the geographical region of the identified communication system. The system determination processor then determines whether the acquired system is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region. If it is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the system determination processor selects the acquired system for providing service. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station attempts to acquire a more desirable system using information from the universal system table.
Abstract:
In a method for negotiating service configuration in a communication system having at least one dedicated channel which is not shared by communication devices in the communication system, a request message indicative of a proposed service configuration is generated in a service negotiator (20). The request message is multiplexed, in a multiplexer (22) coupled to the negotiator (20), with an information data signal to produce a multiplexed signal. The multiplexed signal is encoded in an encoder (24) interposed between the multiplexer (22) and a transmitter (26) in accordance with a service configuration selected by the service negotiator (20). The multiplexed and encoded signal is transmitted by the transmitter (26) over the dedicated channel. Received signals are decoded a decoder (16) interposed between a receiver (14) and a demultiplexer (18). A response message indicative of a response to the proposed service configuration is received by the receiver (14). A determination is made by the service negotiator (20) whether the response message is indicative of a mutually acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal in accordance with the proposed service configuration if the response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal with a universal default service configuration if the response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.

Abstract:
A cellular communication system in which a system user and another user communicate with each other by way of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted via a cell-site in which system: the system user comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said cell-site, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said cell-site and means for measuring signal quality in said information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user; the cell-site comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said system user, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said system user and adjusting means for adjusting the power of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted from the cell-site ; ; and power control means is provided for controlling the transmission power of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals by measuring the signal power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user and transmitting data representing the measured power to the cell-site by way of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals, the adjusting means being responsive to the data in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from the system user to adjust the power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted by the cell-site.
