Abstract: The process and apparatus of the present invention limits the output power of a radiotelephone, operating in a cellular system in the preferred embodiment. This ensures the transmitted sidebands and synthesizer phase noise remains within a certain specification. This is accomplished by power detection and a correction accumulator that together generate a gain control signal by limiting the gain adjustment to a maximum value, even when the cell site communicating with the radiotelephone is sending power turn-up commands to the radiotelephone. This process includes dynamically correcting the output level of the transmitter due to gain variations in the transmitter stages or gain control elements.

Abstract: A system for reducing receiver power consumption in communication system having a transmitter and one or more receivers schedules periodic messages in "slots." Each receiver is assigned a slot during which it monitors the transmissions. The transmitter transmits messages to the receiver only during the assigned slots. The receiver is in an "active state" during its assigned slot. It may remain in the active state after its assigned slot if the message requires the receiver to perform additional actions. During the "inactive state," which is the time period between successive occurrences of its assigned slot, the receiver may perform any action not requiring coordination with the transmitter. It may conserve power during this time by removing power from one or more components such as those used for monitoring the transmissions. At a time during the inactive state shortly before the assigned slot, the receiver applies power to these components and performs initializations. Such initializations may include reacquiring a pilot channel signal to which the receiver may synchronize itself if its timing signals have drifted out of synchronization with those of the transmitter during the preceding inactive state.

Abstract: A method and circuit for processing switch closures in a passive network (100) having switches (S1 ... Sn). The passive network (100) generates an output voltage in response to a switch closure. The circuit comprises a comparison circuit (206), coupled to the passive network, for comparing the output voltage to a reference voltage. A decoder (212), coupled to the comparison circuit, decodes the switch closure if the output voltage is within a predetermined range, and does not decode said switch closure if the output voltage is not within the predetermined range. The circuit differentiates between input ranges in a passive network keypad which allows the proper processing of meaningful key presses, while ignoring inadvertent or superfluous key presses, thereby conserving power and processor time.

Abstract: A keypad on a flip cover is electrically connected to the electronics located within the body of the communications device using a two-pin connection. The flip cover contains a first set of electrical contacts and the body of the communication device contains a second set of electrical contacts. When the flip cover is closed, the electrical contacts on the flip cover make contact with the electrical contacts on the body of the communications device to form an electrical connection that enables signals from the keypad to be sent to a microprocessor in the body of the communications device for processing.

Abstract: The method and the device can be applied in communicationsengineering, in particular in cellular communication systemshaving a transmitter and one or more receivers. They reduce thepower consumption of the receivers. This was attained when forevery receiver (122) a time interval is set during which itmonitors the transmissions, i.e. it is in an active state.Transmitter (120) trasmits messages (143) to receiver (122) onlywhen it is in an active state. In non-active state receiver (122)can perform operation which do not require any coordination withthe transmitter (120). With a power controller (147) it canexclude components used for monitoring the transmissions (146). Alittle time before the preset time for the receiver the latter(12) transmits power to these components and performsinitializations which can include the acquisition of a pilotsignal (134) from transmitter (120), by which receiver (122)synchronizes its clock signal (156) if that had not happenedduring the time of its previous non-active state.48 claims, 9 figures.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for converting phase data into amplitude data. Input phase data is divided into upper and lower phase increments using an input splitter which can also fold in quadrant data. One or more storage elements, such as sine and cosine ROMs, are connected to the input splitter and generate an amplitude, which forms one of a plurality of series terms, and first and second derivatives of the amplitude in response to the upper phase increment. The first derivative and lower phase increment are multiplied together in a digital multiplier to produce a second series term. A third series term comprising a product of the amplitude and lower phase increment squared, is generated by a term generator connected to the splitter and to the storage element. The term generator can comprise elements such as a ROM addressable by the lower phase increment and the amplitude. The first, second and third series terms are subsequently added together by one or more digital adders connected to the multiplier, term generator, storage element and in series with each other to form an output amplitude. An output controller is used for transferring the output amplitude to other apparatus and for incorporating quadrant unfolding elements.
