Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To differentiate between input ranges in a passive keypad.
SOLUTION: There are disclosed a method and circuit for processing switch closures in a passive network 100 having switches S1, ..., Sn. The passive network 100 generates an output voltage in response to a switch closure. The circuit includes a comparison circuit 206, coupled to the passive network, for comparing the output voltage to a reference voltage. A decoder 212, coupled to the comparison circuit, decodes the switch closure if the output voltage is within a predetermined range, and does not decode the switch closure if the output voltage is not within the predetermined range. The circuit differentiates between input ranges in a passive network keypad which allows the proper processing of meaningful key presses, while ignoring inadvertent or superfluous key presses, thereby conserving power and processor time.

Abstract: A detection circuit that detects the open and close state of a flip cover of a communications device. The detection circuit includes a resistive network an d an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). When the flip cover is in the closed position, the circuit detects a unique resistive value through a set of contacts. This voltage level is converted from an analog signal to a digital signal via the ADC for input into a microprocessor. When the flip cover is i n the open position, the contacts are broken, thus, disabling the detection of the unique resistive value. The resulting voltage level is converted from an analog signal to a digital signal via the AD for input into a microprocessor . Software, programmed within the microprocessor, enables the communications device to operate in the appropriate mode according to the detection of the open/close state of the flip cover.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for calibrating a resistive ladder switching matrix coupled to a keypad in a portable electronic device having a housing with a cover that may be positioned in an open state or a closed state. A first contact of a calibration element is coupled to a reference voltage and a second contact of the calibration element is coupled to ground by moving the cover from the open state to the closed state. When the first contact of the calibration element is coupled to the reference voltage and the second contact of the calibration element is coupled to ground, a calibration resistance across the calibration element is determined. The calibration resistance may correspond to an input impedance of the resistive ladder switching matrix when no buttons associated with the keypad are depressed. Signals from the resistive ladder switching network are calibrated when the cover is in the closed state in accordance with the calibration resistance.

Abstract: A flip cover and hinge operate as a rotary switch to select the mode of operation of a communications device. Multiple contacts are located on the sides of the inner surface of the flip cover and a single contact is located on each side of the body of the communications device. Each contact located on the sides of the inner surface of the flip cover represents a different mode of operation for the communications device. As the flip cover rotates from a closure position to its final position as a stand, the mode of operation of the communications device changes as the contact from the body of the communications device connects with one of the contacts on the flip cover. Three modes of operation are presently implemented: the KEYPAD mode, the SMARTPHONE mode, and the SPEAKERPHONE mode.

Abstract: A communications device that operates as a combination flip telephone and personal digital assistant (PDA). The opening and closing of the flip cover activates a switch that changes the operating mode of the communications device. The communications device operates as a combination wireless telephone and personal digital assistant (PDA) when the flip cover is open. This is called the SMARTPHONE mode of operation. When the flip cover is closed, the communications device operates as a standard wireless telephone. This is known as the KEYPAD mode of operation.
