Abstract:
In an embodiment, an access network (AN) receives data for transmission to a user equipment (UE) that is not in a dedicated-channel state. The AN determines that the received data is associated with a communication session of a given type. Based on this determination, the AN transitions the UE to a dedicated-channel state. In an example, the AN can determine the association between the received data and the communication session of the given type based on an indication of the association that is contained with a data session activation request message.
Abstract:
In an embodiment, a first MBSFN area is configured to support a higher data rate than a lower data rate portion of a second MBSFN area, and an application server executes a common data rate mode by delivering a data stream for a group session to the first and second MBSFN areas via IP multicast at a common data rate that is regulated by quality feedback. In a further embodiment, the application server exits the common data rate mode and delivers the data stream to the first MBSFN area via IP multicast at an MBSFN-specific data rate that is higher than the common data rate, while delivering the data stream to the lower data rate portion of the second MBSFN area via IP unicast. In another further embodiment, the application server resumes the common data rate mode.
Abstract:
An access network (AN) periodically broadcasts, to at least one user equipment (UE) served by the AN, a message requesting the at least one UE, whenever the at least one UE determines to perform a given type of transmission, (i) to measure a reverse-link channel upon which the transmission is to be performed, and (ii) to include results of the measurement within the transmission. A given UE receives the periodically broadcasted message from the AN and determines to perform the given type of transmission. The given UE refrains from measuring the reverse-link channel, as instructed by the AN, based on the data being associated with a communication session of a given type. The given UE transmits the data to the AN. If the data transmission omits the requested measurement results, the AN selects a transmission format for subsequent transmissions of the given UE based on the omission.
Abstract:
In an embodiment, an application server determines to transmit a first data stream in a first multicasting area, a second data stream in a second multicasting area and both data streams in a third multicasting area that overlaps with the second multicasting area (e.g., at a border region between the first and second multicasting areas). The application server sends the first data stream to a multicast network management node for transmission in the first and third multicasting areas. The application server sends the first and second data streams to a multiplex stream multiplexer that multiplexes the two data streams into a single higher-rate multiplexed multicast stream with packets that include payloads data for both the first and second data streams. The multiplexed multicast stream is delivered to the third multicasting area for transmission to at least one target UE.
Abstract:
In an embodiment, a proxy client is positioned within a local wireless network (e.g., a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)) and maintains a connection to an application server in a Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) that is separate from the local wireless network. The application server arbitrates group communication sessions between a plurality of user equipments (UEs). An Internet Protocol (IP) unicast connection is established between the proxy client and the application server. The proxy client associates with at least one of the UEs over the local wireless network, and notifies the application server of the association. The application server sends, to the proxy client, traffic associated with a group communication session to the associated UE(s). The proxy client re-transmits the received traffic via IP multicast over the wireless network.
Abstract:
In an embodiment, a UE determines to transmit a message (e.g., an alert message, a call initiation message). Based on the type of the message to be transmitted, the UE selectively transmits supplemental data configured to prompt an access network to transition the UE to a dedicated channel state (DCS). In another embodiment, an application server configured to arbitrate communication sessions between UEs receives a message for transmission to a target UE. Based on the type of the message to be transmitted to the target UE, the application server selectively transmits, to a serving access network of the target UE, supplemental data configured to prompt the serving access network to transition the target UE to the DCS. In another embodiment, the access network selectively transitions a target UE to the DCS based on whether differently sized messages are received at the access network for transmission to the target UE.
