THE INDIVIDUAL SERVICE PROVIDERS (216, 316) MAY BE CONSTRAINED FOR VARIOUS REASONS SUCH AS CONTRACTUAL OR OTHER LEGAL CONSTRAINTS TO HANDLE COMMUNICATIONS ONLY FROM SUBSCRIBER UNITS (212, 312) LOCATED IN CERTAIN GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS SUCH AS WITHIN ONLY CERTAIN COUNTRIES OR PORTIONS OF COUNTRIES. FOR A MOBILE COMMUNICATION FROM A PARTICULAR SUBSCRIBER UNIT (212, 312), THE GATEWAY (210, 310) SELECTS A SERVICE PROVIDER CAPABLE OF HANDLING THE COMMUNICATION. IN ONE IMPLEMENTATION, THE SELECTION IS BASED UPON THE LOCATION OF THE SUBSCRIBER UNIT (212, 312) AND UPON ANY PREFERENCES SPECIFIED BY THE SUBSCRIBER UNIT. Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a wireless telecommunication system utilizing code division multiple access (CDMA) over-the-air with a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) A-interface based network is described. A CDMA radio frequency (RF) signal interface provides a bi-directional interface to a subscriber unit, and a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications A-interface SS7 transport provides a bi-directional interface with GSM mobile services switching center (MSC). Additionally, a transparent message transport is provided over which signaling messages defined in the GSM A-interface protocol are exchanged between the GSM MSC and a subscriber unit. Other signaling message generating by the GSM MSC and subscriber unit are processed and various actions are taken in response, including the configuration and control of signal processing resources. This configuration and control includes the allocation of vocoding and devocoding resources in accordance with the requested type of service, and the invocation of CDMA based encryption capabilities. Other actions include the allocation of CDMA traffic channel processing resources and selection resources at the start of a signaling exchange between the subscriber unit and the BSS or MSC. These resources process both voice and data calls, and signaling messages, such as registrations, from the subscriber unit. The CDMA traffic channel resources are used to perform the IS-95 style CDMA signal processing functions including modulation and demodulation.

Abstract: The mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication units such as mobile telephones. Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway is connected to a set of individual service providers such as local telephone systems. The individual service providers may be constrained for various reasons such as contractual or other legal constraints to handle communications only from subscriber units located in certain geographical areas such as within only certain countries or portions of countries. For a mobile communication from a particular subscriber unit, the gateway selects a service provider capable of handling the communication. In one implementation, the selection is based upon the location of the subscriber unit and upon any preferences specified by the subscriber unit. In other implementations, the selection is based on other parameters such as the altitude, speed or velocity of the subscriber unit or the time of day or date upon which the communication is initiated.

Abstract: A mobile wireless terminal (MWT) receives IP packets destined for a ground network in a predetermined sequence order. The MWT fragments each of the IP packets into many smaller packet fragments, appends identifying information to each of the packet fragments, and transmits the packet fragments in parallel with one another over concurrently operating satellite channels. A receiving station receives the packet fragments transmitted by the MWT. The receiving station forwards the received packet fragments to a ground controller over a network connection, based on the identifying information appended to the packet fragments. The ground controller combines the packet fragments into reconstructed IP packets based on the identifying information appended to the fragments. The ground controller also sequences the reconstructed IP packets in the predetermined sequence order based on the identifying information. The ground controller forwards the reconstructed IP packets in the correct sequence order to the destination ground network. The same sequence of events occur in the opposite direction as well i.e., from the ground controller to the MWT.
