Abstract: A method and apparatus of determining signal strength, regardless of the signal data rate, in a receiver receiving signals from a variable rate transmitter. The incoming signal is comprised of a series of frames. Each frame is comprised of a number of power control groups containing data. The number of the power control groups containing data within each frame is dependent on the unknown data rate. The position of the power control groups within the frame is a pseudorandom. The signal strength of an incoming signal of unknown data rate is determined based upon an active set of power control groups within a frame. The active set of power control groups contain data independent of the unknown data rate. This signal strength information may be used to indicate that the signal strength is sufficient to perform further signal processing.

El conjunto activo de los grupos de control de la potencia, contiene datos que sonindependientes de la velocidad de los datos, desconocida. Esta información sobrela intensidad de la senal, puede ser utilizada para indicar que laintensidad de la senal es suficiente para llevar a cabo el procesamiento ulterior de la senal.

Abstract: The cellular communication system includes a number of base stations through which a mobile unit communicates. The mobile unit maintains a list of active base stations with which it can communicate. One of the active stations is in communication with the mobile and uses this communication to measure the round-trip-delay between mobile and station. This delay is compared with a threshold and if this is exceeded, and the base station is a boundary station, then a hard hand-off is executed. The mobile can also monitor candidate base stations and if a triggering pilot signal is detected a hand-off can be triggered. Preferably the handoff can be between base stations controlled by different mobile switching centres.

Abstract: In a communications network, a network user communicates through a remote unit (30) with another user via at least one base station (100). The communications network includes a first mobile switching center (MSC-I) which controls communications through a first set of base stations including a first base station (100). The remote unit (30) stores a list of active base stations which has an entry corresponding to each base station with which active communication is established. The first base station (100) has an entry on the list of active base stations. The first base station (100) measures a round trip delay of an active communication signal between the first base station (100) and the remote unit (30). A handoff of the active communication signal is initiated if the round trip delay of the active communication exceeds a threshold if the first base station (100) is designated as a reference base station. Alternatively, the remote unit (30) also stores a list of candidate base stations comprising an entry corresponding to each base station through which active communication may be possible but is not established. A handoff of the active communication signal is initiated if the list of candidate base stations comprises an entry corresponding to a triggering pilot signal.

Abstract: In a communications network, a network user communicates using a remote unit (125) with another user (30) via at least one base station (B1A). The network is comprised of first (MSC-I) and second (MSC-II) mobile switching control stations respectively controlling communications through a first set of base stations (B1A-B1E) including a first base station (B1A) and through a second set of base stations (B2A-B2E) including a second base station (B2A). To direct communications between the remote unit (125) and the first (B1A) and second base stations (B2A) the first base station (B1A) measures a round trip delay of an active communication signal between the first base station (B1A) and the remote unit (125). The remote unit (125) measures a first phase offset of a pilot signal received from a first candidate base station (B1A) and reports it to the first mobile switching center (MSC-I) via the first base station (B1A). The first mobile switching center (MSC-I) calculates a candidate round trip delay between the remote unit (125) and the first candidate base station (B1A) based on the first phase offset and the round trip delay of the active communication signal. An active communication control unit accesses a measurement directed hard handoff table to determine a location of the remote unit based on the round trip delay corresponding to the first active communication signal and the candidate round trip delay.

Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for performing an inter-system soft handoff is described. In accordance with the present invention, when a subscriber unit crosses from a first cellular system to a second cellular system, a base station controller (20) determines if sufficient network resources are available to conduct an inter-system soft handoff. If so, the base station controller (20) generates a set of signaling messages that cause a call processing resource to be allocated, and for the call to be processed at the second cellular system. The base station controller (20) then perform data-selection and data-broadcast for the call by transmitting data to the subscriber unit (28) by way of the second cellular system as well as via one or more base stations to which the base station controller (20) is directly coupled. The determination as to whether sufficient network resources are available to conduct the inter-system soft handoff is based on the type of connection that exists between the first cellular system and the second cellular system, the number of inter-system calls being conducted, and the frame offset of the call currently being processed.

Abstract: In a communications system including a set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) in communication with a remote unit (10), a technique is provided for centrally controlling transmission power. In accordance with this technique, a reverse link frame of data is first received from the remote unit (10) at each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20). The base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) determine a frame quality indication corresponding to the received reverse link frame of data and transmit the frame quality indication to a system controller (22, 24). The system controller (22, 24) then calculates, based on the frame quality indication from each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20), an aggregated frame quality indication corresponding to the received reverse link frame of data, and based on the aggregated frame quality indication calculates an absolute reverse threshold value. The absolute reverse threshold value is then provided to each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20), and each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) provides a power control command for the remote unit (10) based on a comparison between the frame quality indication determined at the base station and the absolute reverse threshold value.

Abstract: A method and system determines whether the receiving subscriber unit is also part of a digital wireless telephone system that has compatible vocoding capability. If so, vocoded data is converted into tones that are introduced into a wire-based telephone system for routing to the appropriate receiving digital wireless telephone system. When these tones are received by the receiving digital wireless telephone system, the vocoded data is regenerated based on the tones and then transmitted to the receiving subscriber unit. If the originating and receiving wireless subscriber units are part of the same digital wireless telephone system, the steps of conversion to tones and introduction into the wire-based telephone system may be omitted, and the vocoded data is passed between the two digital wireless telephone systems via an all-digital connection such as an ATM packet network or a wire-based telephone connection where the integrity of digital information is assured.
