Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for setting total reverse link gain between a repeater and a base station (104). The method and apparatus generally comprise setting total reverse link gain (800) between a repeater and a base station comprises determining an operating point for the repeater ; establishing a reverse communication link between the base station and a transceiver device within a coverage area of the repeater; determining if an increase in a reverse link gain is substantially equal to an increase in a noise figure of the base station, using a transmit power of the transceiver device; and adjusting the reverse link gain by an amount based on the operating point and based on a difference in reverse link gain values, if th e increase in the reverse link gain is substantially equal to the increase in the noise figure of the base station, to set the total reverse link gain.

Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving code division multiple access (CDMA) signals. In a described embodiment of the invention, the radio frequency (RF) signals are received through a first polarization RF unit and a second polarization RF unit generating right slant samples and left slant samples. The right slant samples and the left slant samples are each searched and multipath processed independently and the resulting sets of soft decision data combined and decoded. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, right slant and left slant instances of the signal are generated and transmitted to increase the likelihood of differently polarized instances of the signal being available at the receive system.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing handoff between two communication systems. The systems can be CDMA systems operating at different frequencies or systems employing different technologies. In the first system, a base station (4) is configured to provide communications to two or more sectors, with at least one sector assigned to a corresponding repeater (8) which provides coverage overlapping that of both systems. As the remote station (6) moves into the coverage area of the repeater (8), the pilot signal of the repeater (8) is identified, measured and sent to the first system. If the measured pilot signal is above a predetermined add threshold, the repeater (8) is added to the active set of the remote station. The first system can handoff the remote station (6) to the second system: (1) upon initiation of a soft handoff by the base station of the first system; (2) if the pilot signal strength of the repeater (8), as measured by the remote station (6), exceeds a predetermined handoff threshold; (3) if the base station (4) of the first system is dropped from the active set of the remote station (6); (4) if the repeater of the first system is dropped from the active set of the remote station (6); or (5) if the base station (4) and repeater (8) of the first system are dropped from the active set of the remote station (6).

Abstract: In a communications network, a network user communicates using a remote unit with another user via at least one base station. The network is comprised of first and second mobile switching control stations respectively controlling communications through a first set of base stations including a first base station and through a second set of base stations including a second base station. To direct communications between the remote unit and the first and second base stations the first base station measures a round trip delay of an active communication signal between the first base station and the remote unit. The remote unit measures a first phase offset of a pilot signal received from a first candidate base station and reports it to the first mobile switching center via the first base station. The first mobile switching center calculates a candidate round trip delay between the remote unit and the first candidate base station based on the first phase offset and the round trip delay of the active communication signal. A active communication control unit accesses a measurement directed hard handoff table to determine a location of the remote unit based on the round trip delay corresponding to the first active communication signal and the candidate round trip delay.

Abstract: Systems and methods disclosed herein generate pseudo pilot signals including PN phase offsets corresponding to a plurality of pseudo base stations. The pseudo base stations are (1) a plurality of non-physical base stations, and/or (2) physical base stations outside the reception range of the mobile device. The pseudo pilot signals are combined with communication signals from a physical base station to form a series of composite signals. The composite signals are transmitted for reception by a wireless mobile device and are used to determine the location of the mobile device.

Abstract: The system monitors traffic on a CDMA repeater. The system receives a metric related to the operation of the CDMA repeater and automatically determines the amount of call traffic on the CDMA repeater based on the metric. The metric related to operation of the CDMA repeater could be the signal power from the CDMA repeater. The amount of the call traffic on the CDMA repeater could be measured by determining the number of users on the CDMA repeater. The number of users could be determined from a formula where the signal output is proportional to the number of users on the CDMA repeater. The system may also store or transmit to a remote location the metric or the amount of call traffic on the CDMA repeater.
