Date Nov. 28, 1996The present invention concerns a process for the preparation of 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehydes and derivatives thereof from phenolic compounds carrying formyl and/or hydroxymethyl groups in the 2 and 4 positions. The invention also concerns the preparation of 4-hydroxybenzaldehydes from 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehydes. More particularly, the invention concerns the preparation of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, respectively known as "vanillin" and "ethylvanillin". The process for the preparation of 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is characterized in that the group in the 2 position in a phenolic compound carrying formyl and/or hydroxymethyl groups in the 2 and 4 positions is selectively oxidized to a carboxy group, and optionally a hydroxymethyl group in the 4 position is selectively oxidized to a formyl group. A successive decarboxylation step for a 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde produces a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde.

    Abstract: Prepn. of mono- and di-carboxylic acids from unsatd. fatty acids and/or derivs., comprises: (i) oxidising an unsatd. fatty acid, in the form of an acid and/or ester, with hydrogen peroxide in presence of a metal oxide or a carboxylic acid, opt. with a ruthenium catalyst; (ii) reacting the mixt. with nitric acid in presence of a vanadium catalyst, opt. with a co-catalyst; and (iii) recovering the mono- and di-carboxylic acids. The starting material is pref. a fatty acid with at least one double bond, an animal fat or oil, a vegetable oil, an ester of a pptd. fatty acid and is pref. oleic, colza, sunflower and soya oil. The ruthenium catalyst is pref. present in amt. of 1-35 % w.r.t. H2O2. H2O2 may be used with a gp. VIa metal catalyst, esp. a W and/or Mo catalyst in amt. of 1-35 (pref. 3-10) %, w.r.t. H2O2. The vanadium catalyst may be a V halide, a V oxide, a V oxyhalide, a V or vanadyl sulphate, an alkali metal or ammonium vanadate, or V acetylacetonate. The optional V co-catalyst may be based on a Gp. VIIa or VIII metal. A stoichiometric amt. of H2O2 or a 0-50 % excess is used with a carboxylic acid in a hydrogen peroxide : carboxylic acid molar ratio of 10-500 (pref. 10-40) %.

Un autre objet de l'invention est la préparation de 4-hydroxybenzaldéhydes à partir de 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehydes. L'invention concerne plus particulièrement la préparation du 3-méthoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldéhyde et du 3-éthoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldéhyde dénommés respectivement "vanilline" et "éthylvanilline". Le procédé de préparation d'un 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzaldéhyde est caractérisé par le fait l'on soumet un composé phénolique porteur de groupes formyle et/ou hydroxyméthyle en position 2 et 4 à une oxydation sélective du groupe en position 2 en groupe carboxylique, et éventuellement d'un groupe hydroxyméthyle en position 4 en groupe formyle. Une étape successive de décarboxylation d'un 3-carboxy-4 hydroxybenzaldéhyde conduit à un 4-hydroxybenzaldéhyde.

    Abstract: The present invention concerns a process for the preparation of a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and its derivatives. More particularly, the invention concerns the preparation of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, respectively known as vanillin and ethylvanillin. The process for the preparation of a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and its derivatives is characterized in that it consists of selectively oxidising, to a carboxy group, the group in the 2 position with respect to the hydroxyl group, present in the phenolic compounds in a mixture comprising at least a phenolic compound (A) carrying formyl and/or hydroxymethyl groups in the 2 and 4 position, a phenolic compound (B) carrying a formyl or hydroxymethyl group in the 4 position, a phenolic compound (C) carrying a formyl or hydroxymethyl group in the 2 position, resulting in a mixture comprising a 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and a 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, which then undergoes a decarboxylation operation to produce the 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and a phenol which can optionally be recycled.
