Abstract: 1,245,507. Polymerizing olefins. SOLVAY & CIE. 13 Nov., 1969 [2 Dec., 1968; 6 Oct., 1969], No. 55626/69. Heading C3P. Olefins are (co)polymerized in the presence of a catalytic system comprising (a) a solid complex produced by reacting a halogenated derivative of a transition metal with a solid support, and (b) an organometallic activator comprising the reaction product of a diolefin and a compound of the formula AlR 3 wherein R is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, the ratio, P, of the number of radicals derived from said diolefin to the number of radicals R in the said product being between 0À25 and 3. The catalytic systems are preferably used to polymerize at least two alphaolefins (e.g. ethylene with propylene and/or butene-1) optionally with a diolefin (e.g. a non-conjugated aliphatic diene, a non-conjugated monocyclic diene or an alicyclic diene having an endocyclic bridge) to produce a rubbery product. In the examples: (a) ethylene is polymerized in hexane in the presence of hydrogen utilizing reaction products of isoprene and triisobutyl aluminium (having various values of P) and the reaction product of TiCl 4 and a magnesium oxide support; (b) ethylene and butene are copolymerized in hexane in the presence of hydrogen utilizing the reaction product of isoprene and triisobutylaluminium (P= 2) and the reaction product of TiCl 4 and a magnesium carbonate support; (c) ethylene is polymerized in hexane in the presence of hydrogen and titanium tetraoctylate (to give a wide M.wt. range and a low density polymer) using the catalyst specified in (b) above; (d) ethylene is polymerized in hexane and in the presence of hydrogen utilizing a reaction product of triisobutyl aluminium and isoprene (P=2À3) and the reaction product of TiCl 4 and a magnesium hydroxychloride support; (e) ethylene and propylene are polymerized in hexane utilizing the reaction product of triisobutyl aluminium and isoprene (P=1À9) and the reaction product of TiCl 4 and vinyl alcohol/vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer support; and (f) ethylene and propylene are bulk polymerized utilizing the reaction product of triisobutyl aluminium and isoprene (P =1À9) and the reaction product of TiCl 4 and a magnesium oxide support.

Abstract: 1306044 Polymerizing olefins SOLVAY & CIE 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 23239/71 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) at least one organometallic or organosilicon compound and (b) a solid obtained by reacting a support comprising silica and/or alumina with excess of (1) a compound MR n X m-n , where M is aluminium or magnesium, R is a hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, X is hydrogen or halogen, n is at least 1 not greater than m and m is the valence of M, or (2) an alkyl aluminium diene polymer, separating and washing with an inert solvent the solid reaction product, reacting the washed solid reaction product with an excess of a halogen-containing transition metal compound containing at least one halogenmetal bond, and separating the resulting product. The support may be reacted with a trihydrocarbyl aluminium, a hydrooarbyl aluminium halide or hydride, an alkyl aluminium diene polymer, dihydrocarbyl magnesium or hydrocarbyl magnesium halide, and subsequently with a halide, oxyhalide or alkoxyhalide, e.g. of titanium, vanadium, zirconium or chromium. Component (a) may be an alkyl lithium, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, tin or silicon, an alkyl aluminium hydride, an alkyl aluminium halide or a reaction product of a trialkyl aluminium or dialkyl aluminium hydride with a diolefin. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 4-methylpentene- 1 and hexene, which may be copolymerized with aliphatic and alicyclic diolefins. Polymerization may be effected in the gas phase, in a liquid diluent or in excess liquified monomer, optionally in the presence of molecular weight modifiers, e.g. hydrogen, diethyl zinc, diethyl cadmium, alcohol or carbon dioxide, and specific gravity modifiers, e.g. titanium and vanadium alkoxides. The polymers are suitable for extrusion and extrusion-blowing. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of hydrogen and catalysts comprising (a) triisobutyl aluminium and (b) reaction products of titanium tetrachloride with prereaction products of (1 and 4) alumina and ethyl magnesium chloride, (2) silica and ethyl magnesium chloride, (3) alumina and triethyl aluminium and (5) silica and triethyl aluminium.
