Abstract: 1306044 Polymerizing olefins SOLVAY & CIE 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 23239/71 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) at least one organometallic or organosilicon compound and (b) a solid obtained by reacting a support comprising silica and/or alumina with excess of (1) a compound MR n X m-n , where M is aluminium or magnesium, R is a hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, X is hydrogen or halogen, n is at least 1 not greater than m and m is the valence of M, or (2) an alkyl aluminium diene polymer, separating and washing with an inert solvent the solid reaction product, reacting the washed solid reaction product with an excess of a halogen-containing transition metal compound containing at least one halogenmetal bond, and separating the resulting product. The support may be reacted with a trihydrocarbyl aluminium, a hydrooarbyl aluminium halide or hydride, an alkyl aluminium diene polymer, dihydrocarbyl magnesium or hydrocarbyl magnesium halide, and subsequently with a halide, oxyhalide or alkoxyhalide, e.g. of titanium, vanadium, zirconium or chromium. Component (a) may be an alkyl lithium, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, tin or silicon, an alkyl aluminium hydride, an alkyl aluminium halide or a reaction product of a trialkyl aluminium or dialkyl aluminium hydride with a diolefin. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 4-methylpentene- 1 and hexene, which may be copolymerized with aliphatic and alicyclic diolefins. Polymerization may be effected in the gas phase, in a liquid diluent or in excess liquified monomer, optionally in the presence of molecular weight modifiers, e.g. hydrogen, diethyl zinc, diethyl cadmium, alcohol or carbon dioxide, and specific gravity modifiers, e.g. titanium and vanadium alkoxides. The polymers are suitable for extrusion and extrusion-blowing. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of hydrogen and catalysts comprising (a) triisobutyl aluminium and (b) reaction products of titanium tetrachloride with prereaction products of (1 and 4) alumina and ethyl magnesium chloride, (2) silica and ethyl magnesium chloride, (3) alumina and triethyl aluminium and (5) silica and triethyl aluminium.
