Abstract: A focussing error detecting apparatus comprises a compound lens and a photodetector, in which the compound lens has first and second lens regions having different back focal lengths separated by a boundary plane which includes the optical axis of light incident on the compound lens. The photodetector has its photodetecting face positioned on the optical axis of the light between the focal points of the two lens regions, and includes first and second photodetecting elements for receiving light passed through the first lens region at its outer and inner sections with respect to the boundary plane, respectively, and third and fourth photodetecting elements for receiving light passed through the second lens region at its outer and inner sections respectively. A focussing error signal is produced from the difference between the sum of signals from the first and fourth photodetecting elements and the sum of signals from the second and third photodetecting elements.

Abstract: In an optical disc player in which a reading light beam is caused to impinge on an optical disc having a record track formed with an alignment of geometric variations such as a plurality of pits provided in response to information to be modulated in intensity by the record track and a photodetector is provided for detecting the reading light beam coming from the optical disc to generate an output varying in response to the variations in intensity of the detected reading light beam; there are provided a first circuit for producing a reproduced information signal having level variations representing the geometric variations and a tracking error signal which may have level variations depending on the size of each segment of the geometric variations on the strength of the output of the photodetector, a second circuit for detecting the duration of a portion corresponding to each segment of the geometric variations of the reproduced information signal or output of the photodetector and extracting selectively the level of the tracking error signal whenever the detected duration is measured within a predetermined time range so as to produce a modified tracking error signal having the extracted level, and a control circuit for performing tracking control in relation to the reading light beam in response to the modified tracking error signal.

Abstract: An optical pickup incorporates a two-lens system with first and second lenses (13) and (14) being arranged in the following manner: the first lens has a first surface (15) to receive a laser beam radiated from a semiconductor laser and a second surface (16) to direct the laser beam transmitted from the first surface (15) towards the second lens (14); the second lens (14) has a third surface (17) to receive the light flux transmitted from the second surface (16) and a fourth surface (18) to direct the light flux transmitted from the third surface (17) towards an optical disc placed opposite thereto; and the first and fourth surfaces (15, 18) are used as a reference during positioning. The aberrations of the optical pickup are limited within a tolerable limit without incorporating a special device for that purpose even if errors arise in thickness of component lenses of a two-lens system constituting an element of the pickup.

Abstract: A rotary optical head apparatus comprises a first rotary member (18) carrying an objective lens (22) and a second rotary member (28) carrying an image rotator (36). Abstract: n pairs of light beams are applied to an optical disc (D) to form a plurality of beam spots (SP) thereon which are offset by 1/2n of a track pitch p, and n signals which are shifted p/2n in spatial phase are generated from detected output signals indicative of light beams reflected from the beam spots (SP). These n signals are multiplied to produce a tracking control signal whose spatial period is 1/n of the track pitch p. Alternatively, the optical disc has n pairs of wobbling pits or servo pits which are offset by 1/2n of a tracking pitch p are disposed on an optical disc, and the n pairs of servo pits are scanned by a light beam to produce n signals that are shifted p/2n in spatial phase. The tracking control method is effective to effect tracking control on an optical (D) disc whose recording tracks are arragnged at a high density that exceeds the spatial cutoff frequency of an optical system of conventional nature used with the tracking control method.
