    Abstract: Selective enzymatic hydrolysis of only the L-isomer of an L and D mixture of an alpha -N-acyl- alpha -amino acid ester whose alpha carbon atoms is chiral to yield a mixture containing L- alpha -amino acid and D- alpha -N-acyl- alpha -amino acid ester but essentially no D- alpha -amino acid is disclosed.

    Abstract: Prepn. of a cpd., of formula (I), hydrolysable to an alpha-aminoacid, of formula (II), comprises reacting an enamide of formula (III) with water or an organic hydroxy-cpd. of formula R6OH and carbon monoxide. (R1-6 each contains no ethylenic or acetylenic unsaturation, contains 0-15C, and is (i) H or hydrocarbyl; or (ii) hydrocarbyl gp. substd. by acylamino, acyl-(N-hydrocarbyl)amino, formylamino, formyl-(N-hydrocarbyl)amino, hydrocarbyloxy, hydrocarbylthio, acyloxy, acylthio, carboxy, hydrocarbyl-carboxy, hydrocarbyl-thiocarboxy, hydrocarbylamino, dihydrocarbylamino, hydrocarbonyl, hydrocarbylcarbonyl, 3-indolyl, carbamoyl, hydrocarbylcarbamoyl, dihydrocarbylcarbamoyl, 5-imidazolyl, 2-guanidinoyl or halogen; and R1 and R2 each may also be a value of the above substits. in (ii); and R6 can also be hydrocarbyl having 1 or more OH substits.; and R1 and R2, R1 and R3, or R2 and R3 can form a ring; and R4 can be linked with R1 or R2 to form a ring). Prodn. of (II) by hydrolysis of (I) is also claimed, esp. for prodn. of phenylalanine.
