Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce 1,4-butanediol, etc., by using a catalyst obtd. by carrying Pd, Ag, Re and Fe on a carbon carrier as a catalyst for conversion of maleic acid, maleic anhydride, etc., into 1,4-butanediol and THF by hydrogenation. SOLUTION: This catalyst suitable for use in the production of 1,4-butanediol is obtd. by carrying Pd, Ag, Re and Fe on a carbon carrier so that about 0.1-20wt.% Pd, about 0.1-20wt.% Ag, about 0.1-20wt.% Re and about 0.1-5wt.% Fe are contained. When 1,4-butanediol is produced, a precursor capable of hydrogenation such as maleic acid, maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, succinic acid, succinic anhydride or maleic ester is hydrogenated by contact with this hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen-contg. gas.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maximize the production of 1,4-butanediol and minimize the production of γ-butyrolactone. SOLUTION: This process for producing 1,4-butanediol comprises a step for catalytically hydrogenating a precursor material capable of being hydrogenated by bringing the precursor material into contact with a hydrogen-containing gas and a hydrogenation catalyst. The hydrogenation catalyst contains at least one group VIII noble metal of the periodic table, and iron is added to a precursor material capable of being hydrogenated.
