Abstract: 14,647. Stewart, W. J. June 27. Excavating; piles.-Excavating - apparatus for sinking concrete and other piles, wells, caissons, and shafts, and for mining and other purposes, comprises a stout outer tube fitted with a suitable cutting-shoe and a sliding inner tube in which the material may be removed. Fig. 4 shows the outer tube 1 fitted with the shoe 2 and having a collar 10 on the inner tube 6 resting on a shoulder on the shoe. The tube 6 and the collar 10 are split to facilitate the withdrawal of the material when the rod 19 is raised. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of contracted mouthpiece for the tube 6. The tube 6 is provided with a number of guide-bars 12 which serve to lock the conical mouthpiece 13 in position. Fig. 7 shows the lower end of the tube 6 provided with hinged jaws 16 connected to the rods 19 by links 11. Quadrant-shaped plates 18 are secured to the upper part of the jaws to close any opening between them and the end of the tube 6.

Abstract: 123,558. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. Feb. 20, 1918. Concrete vessels.-In reinforced-concrete ships, the reinforcement consists of two parallel networks, the transverse members of which comprise two elements or bars a, b, spaced apart by inclined ties e, such transverse members being adapted to be ber.t to the section of the vessel without altering the spacing of the elements. The elements may be corrugated to permit alteration of length when bending. The longitudinals d, e are supported in the angles between the elements and the ties, as shown. The ties may all slope in the same direction, and they may be bent around the elements a, b. Or the reinforcement may be formed by slotting and expanding the light double-bulbed rolled section shown in Fig. 5.

Abstract: 123,115. Stewart, W. J. Nov. 6, 1917. Concrete vessels. - In the moulding or casting of reinforced concrete ships and other structures, a skeleton comprising metal reinforcement such as is described in Specifications 115,695 and 115,797, is built up on supporting means as a self - contained structure, and the casing or mould a, a for shaping the concrete is attached to the reinforcement b y bolts e and nuts c, which are connected together in pairs, as shown on the right-hand side of Fig. 1, or are linked by flexible connexions d with parts b of the reinforcement, preferably on the opposite side of the skeleton. The apertures left when the bolts e and casing are removed, are subsequently filled in with concrete. The invention is applicable in the case of ship structures where pro-cast reinforced transverse frames cast and matured prior to incorporation in the structure are employed. as described in Specification 122,045.

Abstract: 115,797. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. May 16, 1917. Concrete vessels.-In reinforced concrete ships &c. a bond for connecting a pair of single reinforcing rods or groups of rods comprises two equal wire ties j, j , Fig. 3, with the ends bent at right angles, and placed on opposite sides of the rods. The adjacent ends are then bent to encircle the rods and are twisted together as shown in Fig. 1. The reinforcing rods of a rib for a wall or ship may be connected together by such ties which also may encircle certain of the rods in the main wall or skin reinforcement, that shown being of the kind detscribed in Specification 115,695.

Abstract: 21,851. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. Nov. 2. Reinforced concrete. -The reinforcing- bars of concrete piles, pillars, beams, &c. are bonded in sets of three by means of wire ties a, Figs. 3 and 5, the ends c of the wire being twisted together to tighten the loop b on the middle bar of the set as shown in Fig. 1, and the extremities being formed into a fork. The ties may be opened out as shown in Fig. 8 to support the bars at shorter distances. Struts such as flat bars h, k, Fig. 1, may be used between the main bars. According to the Provisional Specification, the ties may be bent completely around each bar and may embrace more than three bars.

Abstract: 10,549. Stewart, W. J. May 15. Girders and beams; floors.-Concrete beams of T-section are formed with transverse ribs 2, Figs. 2 and 3, and lower flanges at the ends for seating them, and are reinforced in the flanges and the lower part of the web which is enlarged for this purpose. The beams may be laid side by side to form a floor, and the ribs may project on one side to support the adjacent beam. To reduce the weight, holes 10, Fig. 7, may be made in the meeting edges of the flanges, or the webs may be panelled or formed with openings. The flanges may be broader towards the centre than at the ends, and nailing-fillets of softer concrete may be sunk in the top or bottom. Metal joists, which support the concrete beams, are protected by hollow vertical or splayed brackets 18, Fig. 12, integral with the beams. Fig. 14 shows a notched joint, and Fig. 15 a dovetailed joint suitable for concrete rafters or beams over bay and like windows ; the joints may be reinforced by bars 22, 23. Specifications No. 8370, A.D. 1902, No. 25,652, A.D. 1903, and No. 14,928, A.D. 1906, are referred to.

Abstract: 4999. Stewart, W. J. March 5. Locomotives.- Comprises a projecting structural frame which encases the shells of ships or other structures, stated to be applicable to railway engines. It consists of a series of reinforced concrete slabs of concrete and steel wire or strips, which are arranged so that intermediate spaces or pockets are formed. These pockets are filled with sand, springs, or other cushioning material, or liquid or semiliquid or gaseous fluids. The outer walls are preferably coated or incorporated in intermediate layers with waterproofing - material. The walls A, B, C are formed of reinforced concrete slabs a, b, c united by any convenient joint, several of which are described. The slabs are formed with ribs a , b , c and are situated as shown, so that the various slabs break joint and also form intermediate pockets or spaces. The slabs consist of concrete in which is embedded steel wire or strips, arranged as shown in Figs. 12 and 13. The slabs may be kept apart by flat springs, or the pockets may be filled with sand, springs, springs embedded in concrete, or fluids.
