    Abstract: A heating furnace for heating a porous preform, when the preform is manufactured from the coarse-based fine glass particles of the optical fibre, which heating furnace possesses a heating element and a faucet pipe which is located inside the heating element for the purpose of separating the heating air circuit from the heating element, characterised in that the shell of the faucet pipe is manufactured from extremely pure carbon and the inner and outer walls are lined with carbon material which is selected from a group which includes pyrolytic graphite and solid, carbonated vitreous carbon.

    Abstract: A furnace used for conducting at least one of the steps of dehydration, fluorine addition and sintering of porous quartz base material prepd by flame hydolysis techniques such as vaporphase axial deposition or outside seeding, which makes it possible to keep completely airtight the joints of a long core tube, which cannot be mfd. monolithically, to prevent moisture, oxygen and other impurities contained in the outer atmosphere from intruding inside the core tube, and to prevent corrosive and toxic gases present inside the core tube from leaking outside. The core tube is made of high-purity carbon with its inner wall and/or outer wall being coated with a gas-impermeable coating film. It has a cylindrical form with its axis extending lengthwise, and is divided into several portions along the axis, and the upper and lower edges of each divided portions are flattened to provide contact faces, which are sealed with carbon packing interposed therebetween. The core tube has a mechanism for axially pushing it with a uniform force from around its periphery.

    Abstract: There is provided a furnace comprising a muffle tube made of highly pure carbon with a gas impermeable coating, a heater in a furnace body which surrounds the muffle tube and an inner cylinder made of highly pure carbon with or without a gas impermeable coating which is detachably fitted inside the muffle tube near the heater for a thermal treatment of a quartz glass preform by inserting the preform in the muffle tube, wherein at least one of the highly pure carbon made members which constitute the muffle tube, the inner cylinder and an optional element necessary for the muffle tube is made of a graphite material which is produced by self-sintering mesophase powder.
