    Abstract: A vessel which produces metal from a metalliferous feed material by a direct smelting process is disclosed. The vessel contains a molten bath having a metal layer (15) and a slag layer (16) on the metal layer and has a gas continuous space (31) above the slag layer. The vessel includes a hearth formed of refractory material having a base (3) and sides (55) in contact with the molten metal and side walls (5) which extend upwardly from the sides (55) of the hearth and are in contact with the slag layer and the gas continuous space. The side walls that contact the gas continuous space include water cooled panels (57) and a layer of slag on the panels. The vessel also includes one or more than one lance/tuyere (13) extending downwardly into the vessel and injecting an oxygen-containing gas into the vessel above the metal layer and a plurality of lances/tuyeres (11) injecting at least part of the metalliferous feed material and a carbonaceous material with a carrier gas into the molten bath so as to penetrate the metal layer.

    Abstract: Procedimiento de fusión directa para producir hierro y/o ferroaleaciones que funciona a escala comercial en una vasija metalúrgica con un crisol, unas paredes laterales y un techo, y una anchura mínima del interior del crisol por lo menos de 4 metros, comprendiendo dicho procedimiento las etapas siguientes: (a) formar un baño fundido que contiene metal fundido y escoria fundida; (b) suministrar materiales de alimentación que son material ferruginoso, material carbonoso y fundentes en la vasija, mediante la inyección de los materiales de alimentación en el baño fundido a través de 3 o más lanzas de inyección que se extienden en sentido descendente y que generan de este modo un flujo de gas por lo menos de 0, 35 Nm3/s/m2 en el baño fundido (en el que m2 se refiere al área de una sección transversal horizontal a través del crisol, en su anchura mínima) que ocasiona la formación de una zona en el baño fundido en la que se proyectan hacia arriba salpicaduras, gotitas y corrientes de material fundido desde la zona del baño fundido; (c) fundir material de alimentación ferruginoso para obtener metal fundido en el baño fundido y generar gases en el baño; (d) inyectar chorros de un gas que contiene oxígeno que es aire o aire con hasta un 50% de oxígeno a una velocidad por lo menos de 150m/s a través de 3 o más lanzas con extremos de salida de un diámetro interior de 0, 8 m o inferior, en un espacio por encima de la superficie inactiva del baño fundido (el "espacio superior") y realizando la combustión de los gases generados en el procedimiento; y (e) generar un movimiento ascendente del material fundido desde el baño fundido al espacio superior para facilitar la transmisión del calor al baño y reducir al mínimo las pérdidas de calor de la vasija; estando dicho procedimiento caracterizado porque arrastra un volumen de gas del espacio superior hacia los chorros del gas que contiene oxígeno inyectado en la vasija, que es de 2 a 6 veces el volumen del gas inyectado y por la transmisión delcalor de la poscombustión de los gases generados en el baño al material fundido en el espacio superior en la parte de inyección del gas, y el posicionado de las lanzas de inyección del gas que contiene oxígeno con respecto a los extremos de salida de las lanzas que no están a más de 7 m por encima de una superficie inactiva del baño fundido, y que la disposición de las lanzas y la longitud que sobresalen en la vasija están seleccionadas de manera que se impide que la llama originada por la poscombustión prosiga a lo largo de las paredes laterales o del techo de la vasija.
