    Abstract: It is intended to provide a bacterium selectively synthesizing canthaxanthin from which canthaxanthin, which is a carotenoid, can be simply extracted and purified and a method for producing canthaxanthin by a culture method. A carotenoid-producing bacterium belonging to the genus Paracoccus which selectively produces canthaxanthin which accounts for 90% by weight or more of the total amount of produced carotenoids which include .beta.-carotene, .bet a.- cryptoxanthin, echinenone, canthaxanthin, 3-hydroxyechinenone, 3~- hydroxyechinenone, zeaxanthin, phoenicoxanthin, adonixanthin and astaxanthin , and a method for producing canthaxanthin in which a cultivation is carried o ut using the bacterium and the carotenoids are collected from the bacterial cel l or the culture solution after the cultivation.
