    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable formation of a lamp with an arbitrary shape, maintenance of strength on a connection part and reduction of a starting voltage by forming a low pressure discharge lamp with a bent shape through a process of sealingly connecting together a plurality of glass bulbs via metallic rings interposed between respective adjacent bulbs. CONSTITUTION:Projections 14, 14 are formed on respective side faces of, for instance, straight tubes 1, 1 each of which is provided with a phosphor film 2 formed on its inner face, with its one end opened and the other end closed. A metallic ring 6 whose diameter is equal to those of projections 14, 14 is placed in alignment between both projections to sealingly connect two straight tubes 1, 1 to each other. Since the strength of the metallic ring 6 is high and its shape can be determined arbitrarily, both tubes 1, 1 can be formed in various shapes of a collective tube by holding an arbitrary relative posture and mutual distance. Further, its starting voltage can be set low if the metallic bulb 6 is used as an intermediate electrode.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent damage to a filament electrode by detecting faulty exhaust through the discharge spectra generated by a high voltage applied between a filament electrode and an outer electrode which is additionally provided on the outside tube wall located closer to an tube end than a filament coil. CONSTITUTION:An outer electrode 2 is additionally provided on the outside tube wall located closer to an tube end than a filament coil 1d at a filament electrode of a discharge lamp 1 exhausted and charged with a desired gas. A high voltage is applied between the outside electrode 2 and the filament electrode to produce an electric discharge between them and the faulty exhaust is detected by means of the discharge spectra. In this manner, the discharge in the discharge lamp 1 occurs on the tube end side of the filament coil 1d, namely it occurs between a metal part 1c supporting the filament coil 1d and the outer electrode 2. The discharge does not occur on the part of the filament coil 1d, so that the damage to the filament electrode can be prevented.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To make closing materials function as preheaters by fixing a lead wire for electrode power supply and another lead wire outside a conductive ceramic closing material installed on an end part of e ceramic luminous tube bulb and connecting lead wires of facing electrodes with each other through a bimetal. CONSTITUTION:Closing materials 5A and 5B ere formed by compression molding of a mixture consisting of Al2O3 particles and W powder, and particularly the ceramic part between lead wires 7A and 7C fixed outside the closing material 5A is set to be about 0.4 OMEGA. When a power source 12 is turned on, the closing material 5A is heated by a current flowing across the lead wires 7A and 7C and it becomes 60 deg.C ten seconds later, for example, and it functions as a preheater. As a result, Hg staying on the closing material 5A is vaporized and a ratio of gas pressure of Hg to that of filling Ar becomes maximum in its Penning effect. At that time, a contact of a bimetal 8 is opened and the closing member 5A finishes functioning as the preheater. A halide lamp excellent in a starting characteristic can be obtained by this composition.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the structure and to lengthen the service life by producing an electron beam through high frequency discharge occurring between a pair of electrodes arranged in a light transmission air-tight container then impinging against a conductor adhered with electron beam exciting fluorescent material and emitting light. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 2, 3 made of stainless steel mesh are contained while facing each other in an air-tight container 1 made of light transmission glass while encapsulating argon gas and a conductor 4 applied with fluorescent material to be excited by the electron is arranged on the rear of the electrode 3 while separating about 1mm thus to constitute a high frequency discharge lamp. Then a high frequency power source 8 of 3KHz-1MHz is connected between the electrodes 2, 3 while D.C. power source 9 is connected between the electrodes 3, 4 such that the conductor 4 will be the anode thus to emit light. Consequently, electrode and conductor having predetermined area are employed to produce uniform brightness over the entire face while the service life is lengthened and the temperature dependence is eliminated.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To relieve degradation of the characteristic caused on a ballast by applying high frequency electric field crossing with the discharge path onto the discharge path thereby enabling improvement of negative resistance characteristic without subjected to magnetic influence. CONSTITUTION:The conductor 5 connected to an electrode 3 will feed the discharging power from a power source 9 through a starting circuit 8 while the high frequency electrode 4a is fed with high frequency power from a power source 7 when thermions are emitted from the electrode 3 under lighting. When it is connected electrically in such a manner to start discharge through the circuit 8, the electron group moving in the discharge circuit is subjected to the force caused on the high frequency field produced between the electrode 4a thus to promote dispersion in the direction of the electrode 4a. Consequently, the density of electron for ionizing the encapsulated gas will drop to provide positive correlation and positive characteristic between the discharge current and voltage thus to improve the negative resistance characteristic resulting in relieving of degradation of the characteristic caused on the ballast.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To save an energy consumption and to prolong the service life of an electric discharge lamp by impressing a low voltage for maintaining discharging for a prescribed time and repeating this operation intermittently after starting lit up with a high voltage. CONSTITUTION:A voltage signal is generated with a prescribed timing from a timer 12 connected to a battery 11. With a signal V1 of 1, a self-traveling multivibrator 15 outputs the voltage signal for a constant time at a prescribed period and a voltage amplifier 16 gives the high voltage sufficient to re-ignite a fluorescent lamp 18. The self-travelling multivibrator 15 outputs a prescribed time voltage signal with a same prescribed period, a delaying circuit 17 delays for a constant time from the voltage signal of a vibrator 13, and the voltage amplifier 16 generates the low voltage to the extent to be able to discharge and maintain with the fluorescent lamp 18 for a prescribed time and adds it to the fluorescent lamp. By this constitution, the energy consumption can be saved and the service life of the fluorescent lamp can be prolonged.
