    Abstract: Signature printing with an automatic duplexing copier by simultaneously presenting plural document sheets to the imaging station of the copier in a predetermined nonserial page order for producing a set of signature copy sheets suitable for subsequent center-folding into signature sets, by loading a normal serial set of document sheets into an automatic document reordering and presenting system (associated with the copier) which automatically reorders that set of document sheets into a predetermined nonserial reordered page order for signature pair page order "two-up" copying, and automatically presenting the pairs of automatically reordered document sheets to the imaging station of the copier to be copied in the reordered page order to provide collated page order signature sets automatically with the copier for on-line center-folding and finishing without requiring any manual reordering of either the document sheets or the signature copy sheets. The automatic reordering includes automatic 180.degree. rotation of alternate pairs of simplex document sheets to provide proper orientation of the document pages for the automatic duplex copier. The document sheets are either automatically separated into two stacks for two document sheets to be presented simultaneously lengthwise (short-edge-first) in parallel to one side of the imaging station, or reordered into one stack for sideways (long-edge-first) presentation from an orthogonal direction.

    Abstract: SEGMENTED GATE DEVELOPER FLOW CONTROLLER An apparatus and method is provided which limits the amount of developer that is presented to an electrostatic latent image to a width corresponding to the length of copy paper used. This particular apparatus and method apply to a development system which has a developer sump communicated to a magnetic transport means through a developer outlet at the lower end of the sump. During development functions, magnetic developer flows from the sump through the outlet to the magnetic transport means to be presented to the latent image. A plurality of magnetic gates are provided, each of which may be swung into closed position adjacent the outlet to magnetically block flow of developer through that portion of the outlet corresponding to the length of the magnetic gate adjacent thereto. Each magnetic gate may also be swung into an open position which allows developer to flow through the outlet corresponding to the length of the magnetic gate adjacent thereto. Certain of the magnetic gates may be selectively located in open or closed position to allow developer to flow through the outlet over a width corresponding to the length of a copy sheet being utilized. All of the gates may be located in closed position when it is desired to stop all of developer flow through the outlet to purge the developer system.

    Abstract: In a first embodiment, a stop having a plurality of ports is connected to and covers an end of a rectangular sleeve having a movable wide wall. In a region near the stop, a narrow wall of the sleeve also has a plurality of ports. A nozzle coupled to a pump provides a flow of air into the other end of the sleeve and the air exits through the ports. With this arrangement, a rectangular sheet inserted into said other end of the sleeve is fluidly brought into registration with the narrow wall and stop. After the sheet has been registered, the movable wide wall is moved towards the other wide wall of the sleeve. If a sheet is wrinkled, such movement flattens the sheet. In a second embodiment, similar to the first, the narrow wall and stop include internal projections against which an inserted sheet is registered. In a third embodiment, similar to the first, a manifold is coupled to the ports and a vacuum pump is coupled to the manifold to accelerate registration. In a fourth embodiment, similar to the third, the pumps are replaced with a reversible pump to register and discharge a sheet.

    Abstract: Split Developer Housing with Interlocked Flow Gate and Catch A magnetic brush development system for developing latent electrostatic images carried by a photoconductor has a stationary section containing at least one development roll and a movable section containing at least a sump for storing a supply of developer. The movable section is translatable forwardly and rearwardly toward and away from the stationary section and includes a flow gate for selectively interrupting the flow of developer from the sump. There is a catch mechanism for releasably latching the sections of the housing which is interlocked with the flow gate to insure that the flow gate is closed before the catch is disengaged, while still permitting the flow gate to be opened and closed at will while the catch is engaged.
