    Abstract: A developing system for latent images wherein a rotating fur brush receives marking particles from a donor assembly comprising a plurality of discrete elongated donor members which are successively moved through a closed path defining a volume within a sump housing, a portion of the defined volume being occupied by marking particles contained in the housing. The donor members may be circular, crescentic, or other configurational cross-sections and may or may not cooperate with a doctor blade. They may be in the form of taut flexible elements which are vibrated slightly to remove excessive toner. In certain embodiments, a striking element in the form of a thin taut but flexible wire or other material is used to charge and fluff the fibrous applicator as well as redistribute undesirable concentrations of toner within the applicator.

    Abstract: A sheet feeding device adapted to separate a single sheet from a stack of sheets and forward the separated sheet away from the stack for subsequent processing. The apparatus includes a feed belt disposed adjacent one edge of the stack for contact with the lead edge of the top sheet in the stack to separate the sheet therefrom. Gate means biased into engagement with the feed belt provide a forward stop for the sheet stack, actuation of the feed belt causing the top sheet in the stack to be forced between the low friction upper surface of the gate means and the feed belt to move the top sheet off from the stack, the biased gate means preventing passage of multiple sheets by the feed means.

    Abstract: In a first embodiment, a stop having a plurality of ports is connected to and covers an end of a rectangular sleeve having a movable wide wall. In a region near the stop, a narrow wall of the sleeve also has a plurality of ports. A nozzle coupled to a pump provides a flow of air into the other end of the sleeve and the air exits through the ports. With this arrangement, a rectangular sheet inserted into said other end of the sleeve is fluidly brought into registration with the narrow wall and stop. After the sheet has been registered, the movable wide wall is moved towards the other wide wall of the sleeve. If a sheet is wrinkled, such movement flattens the sheet. In a second embodiment, similar to the first, the narrow wall and stop include internal projections against which an inserted sheet is registered. In a third embodiment, similar to the first, a manifold is coupled to the ports and a vacuum pump is coupled to the manifold to accelerate registration. In a fourth embodiment, similar to the third, the pumps are replaced with a reversible pump to register and discharge a sheet.

    Abstract: A buffer system for isolating a supply of paper web from a processor operating on the paper web. The buffer system comprises a vacuum chamber and vacuum pump creating a pressure differential across a portion of the paper web forcing the web into the vacuum chamber in the form of a loop having suitable tension. The loop rises and falls within the vacuum chamber to either store or deliver web to the processor in response to the paper supply delivering more or less web than the processor can accommodate. In one embodiment, the vacuum chamber is provided with a movable wall to accommodate paper webs of different widths and a foot extending from the movable wall communicates with orifices to change the pressure differential.
