Abstract: An electromagnetic radiation detector includes an InP substrate having a first surface opposite a second surface; a first InGaAs electromagnetic radiation absorber stacked on the first surface and configured to absorb a first set of electromagnetic radiation wavelengths; a set of one or more buffer layers stacked on the first InGaAs electromagnetic radiation absorber and configured to absorb at least some of the first set of electromagnetic radiation wavelengths; a second InGaAs electromagnetic radiation absorber stacked on the set of one or more buffer layers and configured to absorb a second set of electromagnetic radiation wavelengths; and an immersion condenser lens formed on the second surface and configured to direct electromagnetic radiation through the InP substrate and toward the first InGaAs electromagnetic radiation absorber and the second InGaAs electromagnetic radiation absorber.

Abstract: In one embodiment, an infrared (IR) imaging system for determining a concentration of a target species in an object is disclosed. The imaging system can include an optical system including an optical focal plane array (FPA) unit. The optical system can have components defining at least two optical channels thereof, said at least two optical channels being spatially and spectrally different from one another. Each of the at least two optical channels can be positioned to transfer IR radiation incident on the optical system towards the optical FPA. The system can include a processing unit containing a processor that can be configured to acquire multispectral optical data representing said target species from the IR radiation received at the optical FPA. Said optical system and said processing unit can be contained together in a data acquisition and processing module configured to be worn or carried by a person.

Abstract: A light spectrometer including a laser configured to provide for a laser pulse (12), a quantum dot (30), an objective (21) configured to focus the laser pulse (12) onto the quantum dot (30) such that a fluorescent light beam is emitted from the quantum dot (30), a blazed grating (40) arranged in a light path of the fluorescent light beam to generate a plurality of fluorescent light beams of different wavelengths, an imaging lens (26) configured to generate a plurality of images from the fluorescent light beams of different wavelengths, respectively, a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array (50) having a plurality of pixels arranged at the imaging plane of the images, a circuit interfaced with the SPAD array, the circuit configured to detect a first photon and a second photon of an entangled photon pair emitted by the fluorescent light beam of the quantum dot in response to the laser pulse (12), wherein each pixel of the SPAD array is arranged to be aligned with a respective one of the plurality of images.

Abstract: An optical system, comprising a multi-spectral optical element, a switchable filter, a dual bandpass filter, and a sensor. The multi-spectral optical element receives light in at least a first spectral band and a second spectral band. The dual bandpass filter filters out wavelengths of light in a transition region of the switchable filter between the first spectral band and the second spectral band. The switchable filter filters light received from the dual bandpass filter in the first spectral band in a first mode where the switchable filter transmits light in the first spectral band and in a second mode where the switchable filter does not transmit light in the first spectral band. The sensor is disposed at an image plane, and the multi-spectral optical element is configured to produce a modulation transfer function value that is a above a predetermined threshold for each of the spectral bands.

Abstract: The teachings of the present disclosure enable a reduction of the refractive index of a material by incorporating an additive selected from air, vacuum, or an inert gas in the material to turn the material into a material foam that is suitable for use in optical systems. A material foam in accordance with the present disclosure is characterized by a porosity that reduces its refractive index from that of the same material as found in nature. The higher porosity also decreases the density of the material from that of the same material as found in nature. Material foams in accordance with the present disclosure are suitable for use in the low-refractive-index layers of a Bragg mirror.
