    Abstract: TITLE OF THE INVENTION: A HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LAMP IGNITION SYSTEM A high intensity discharge (HID) lamp has an arc tube including a pair of main electrodes and at least one auxiliary electrode or probe, wherein a high frequency (HF) high voltage is applied to the probe for forming a high frequency (HF) ignition discharge for establishing a low frequency (LF) arc discharge between the main electrodes. In this ignition system, the electrodes of the arc tube are arranged so that an LF discharge path and an HF discharge path are positioned in an X- or a Y-configuration in the arc tube for causing easy lamp ignition. Also, to simplify the outer leads, it is desirable to mount the probe on one of the main electrodes by a dielectric member opposite another main electrode thereby to form a shorter gap between the probe and the other main electrodes than that between the main electrodes. The starting device of HID lamps has a high frequency - high voltage (HF-HV) generator, the output of which is applied, directly or indirectly, to the probe. Accordingly, sure ignition and hot-restrike can be achieved by applying through the outer leads a superimposed voltage including the source voltage and the MF-HV.

    Abstract: Apparatus is provided for generating electrode voltage for a number tube utilizing a center-tapped transformer to transmit pulses to a number tube anode. The transformer primary is center-tapped and supplied with opposing pulse potentials at the outer ends through non-linear resistors at a time corresponding to the appearance of voltage on a selected cathode electrode. A d.c. bias potential is connected to the tube anode to complement the pulse voltage of the transformer. The pulses are derived from a ring counter.

    Abstract: An electrodeless lamp comprises an envelope (12) containing a plasma forming fill which includes at least one of sulfur and selenium when excited which emits principally visible light, which is in the form of molecular radiation. The envelope (12) has a diameter of less than one half inch. Means (1) are provided for generating electromagnetic energy. Further means (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) are provided for coupling said electromagnetic energy to said envelope to excite said fill, which in the absence of envelope rotation or with rotation at an insufficient speed, forms a discharge (14) which does not substantially fill the interior volume of said envelope (12). By additional means (13) the envelope (12) is rotated at a fast enough rate so as to cause the discharge (15) formed by the fill to substantially fill the interior volume of the envelope (12).

A crossed-field electron gun comprising longitudinal cathode 5, Fig. 2, anode 3 and low potential electrode 4 has the magnetic field H(x) varying in intensity as a function of distance x from the low potential electrode with the voltage and magnetic field conditions such that the electrons emitted from the cathode are converged on to a stable linear orbit 6. The magnetic field intensity may decrease from the electrode 4 towards the anode 3 or vice versa. The gun may be used in a cathode-ray tube and in the arrangement of Fig. 5 the gun 3, 4, 5 is located in a bent portion of the tube neck and the beam is deflected on to the main axis of the tube by a magnet 21 providing a non- uniform field distribution such as to ensure that the electrons are again guided into a stable linear orbit and the original ribbon beam converted into a fine electron beam. In another embodiment, the gun system is annular to produce a hollow electron beam. The gun may be utilized in velocity modulated tubes or electron accelerators.
