Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for increasing temperature in a cold zone in an inductively-coupled electrodeless lamp. SOLUTION: This inductively-coupled electrodeless lamp 20 has a pair of exciting coils positioned within (to surround) an enveloped body 22 or bulb. The pair of exciting coils 21, 24 are positioned and driven, in such a manner as to generate at least one moving-ring forming electric field in the enveloped body 22. The moving-ring electric field forms a corresponding moving ring of plasma discharge in the enveloped body 22. The movement of this electric field forms a volume, having a uniformly high temperature in the enveloped body 22, and this facilitates emission or re-emission of photons.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-power aperture lamp, by providing a reflector demarcating a reflective cavity surrounding a bulb storing a filler for discharge formation and an aperture for light emission, and providing the reflective cavity with a considerably small inside surface area. SOLUTION: A coupling construction transmits microwave energy, and a bulb stores a filler for discharge formation that emits light when stimulated by the microwave energy. A reflector is disposed in a microwave cavity. and the inside surface area of a reflective cavity is considerably smaller than that of the microwave cavity, A screen 4a has a solid portion 5a and a mesh portion 7a, and a dielectric substance 24 is present between an upper surface of a wave guide 25 and a bulb 9a. The dielectric substance 24 has a dielectric constant larger than the dielectric constant of air. A dielectric constant of 4 or more is needed to considerably reduce the size of a resonance cavity 3.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the long service life by using a detector capable of supplying a signal corresponding to the detected lamp operation parameter to a control circuit, having a six-port directional coupler connected between an RF power supply source and a lamp, and detecting the forward and reflected power, and allowing them to be corresponded to the lamp operation parameter. SOLUTION: This lamp is covered with a reflective film 5 capable of defining an aperture 16 by an electrodeless lamp bulb 14. A loop 17 for inductive connection is driven by a solid state RF supply source 18 to supply the lamp power. A directional coupler supplies a signal representing the forward power and the reflected power to an RF control circuit. The RF supply source 18 is constituted so us to adjust a predetermined operating frequency on the basis of a low voltage DC signal. Whereby the RF control circuit provides the coherent lighting of the lamp, the quick operation of the lamp for full power, and the stable lamp operation over a life period of the lamp.

Abstract: An ultra bright, low wattage inductively coupled electrodeless aperture lamp is powered by a solid state RF source in the range of several tens to several hundreds of watts at various frequencies in the range of 400 to 900 MHz. Numerous novel lamp circuits and components are disclosed including a wedding ring shaped coil having one axial and one radial lead, a high accuracy capacitor stack, a high thermal conductivity aperture cup and various other aperture bulb configurations, a coaxial capacitor arrangement, and an integrated coil and capacitor assembly. Numerous novel RF circuits are also disclosed including a high power oscillator circuit with reduced complexity resonant pole configuration, parallel RF power FET transistors with soft gate switching, a continuously variable frequency tuning circuit, a six port directional coupler, an impedance switching RF source, and an RF source with controlled frequency-load characteristics. Numerous novel RF control methods are disclosed including controlled adjustment of the operating frequency to find a resonant frequency and reduce reflected RF power, controlled switching of an impedance switched lamp system, active power control and active gate bias control.

Abstract: An electrodeless lamp includes a stationary bulb (10) containing a fill for producing a discharge, the fill has a primary radiating material which ordinarily produces an unstable discharge in the absence of bulb rotation. Abstract: An electrodeless lamp comprises an envelope (12) containing a plasma forming fill which includes at least one of sulfur and selenium when excited which emits principally visible light, which is in the form of molecular radiation. The envelope (12) has a diameter of less than one half inch. Means (1) are provided for generating electromagnetic energy. Further means (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) are provided for coupling said electromagnetic energy to said envelope to excite said fill, which in the absence of envelope rotation or with rotation at an insufficient speed, forms a discharge (14) which does not substantially fill the interior volume of said envelope (12). By additional means (13) the envelope (12) is rotated at a fast enough rate so as to cause the discharge (15) formed by the fill to substantially fill the interior volume of the envelope (12).

Abstract: Apparatus for efficiently exciting an electrodeless lamp to produce visible light. A source of microwave energy is coupled to a cylindrical cavity which encloses an electrodeless lamp. The cylindrical cavity includes a sidewall and end wall which is made from a metallic mesh which passes light produced from the electrodeless lamp. The electric field intensity within the cylindrical cavity is increased in the region above the lamp center. The increased electric field intensity produces a more uniform temperature across the bulb service, increasing the rate of plasma heating of gas molecules in the lamp.
