Abstract: Lactams are prepared by the reaction of a cycloalkanecarboxylic acid or an alkyl derivative thereof with nitrosyl hydrogen pyrosulphate. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. in aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon or nitroparaffin. The acid may be one having 4-12 carbon atoms in the ring. Examples are given for the preparation of caprolactam, capryllactam, valerolactam and lauryllactam. The process is operated at a temperature between 30 DEG and 150 DEG C. The lactam is separated by extracting the unreacted acid from the mixture by solvent extraction; neutralizing the remaining aqueous solution with an alkaline material, and extracting the lactam with a solvent, e.g. benzene, chloroform or methylene dichloride.

Abstract: Sulphur dioxide is removed from hydrogen chloride and sulphurous acid from hydrochloric acid by contacting the impure material with nitrosyl chloride in the presence of water or dilute HCl. Thus cycloalkane is photo-reacted with a gas mixture of NOCl and HCl to give cycloalkyloxime hydrochloride which is subjected to Beckmann's re-arrangement in the presence of H2SO4 catalyst to give the lactam, the by-product HCl containing SO2 is contacted with NOCl in the presence of water or dilute HCl. The NOCl source may be the effluent gases from the cycloalkyloxime hydrochloride reaction or is part of the NOCl/HCl mixture used in the manufacture of the lactam.ALSO:In a process for the preparation of lactams, a cycloalkane is photo-reacted with a gas mixture of nitrosyl chloride and HCl to give a cycloalkyloxime hydrochloride which is subjected to Beckmann's rearrangement in the presence of H2SO4 to give the lactam, the by-product HCl containing SO2 being contacted with NOCl in the presence of water or dilute HCl to remove the SO2 content. The NOCl source may be effluent gases from the cycloalkyloxime hydrochloride reaction or is part of the NOCl/HCl mixture used in the manufacture of the lactam.

In consumable electrode arc-welding, the feed rate of the electrode is varied cyclically to achieve a pulsed arc-type welding. A power supply with a dropping, constant or rising characteristic may be used. The maximum feed rate of each cycle is such as to produce spray transfer. Metal transfer does not occur during the greater part of each cycle. Mild steel may be so welded with a shielding gas of 98% argon, 2% oxygen. The electrode may be fed by a programmed automatically controlled variablespeed motor. In one modification, the electrode 30, Fig. 6, is fed by a motor-driven eccentric feed roll 40 which co-operates with a spring- loaded idler roll. In another modification, the variation in feed rate is achieved by laterally oscillating a flexible guide tube 66, Fig. 7, for the electrode 30 by a double acting pneumatic cylinder 68.
