    Abstract: 1390523 Nitroparaffins SOC CHIMIQUE DE LA GRANDE PAROISSE 16 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 47651/72 Heading C2C Nitroparaffins are made by nitrating propane with nitrogen peroxide in the presence of oxygen introduced in the form of air at a pressure of 8 to 14 bars, the starting materials being preheated at the reaction pressure and being introduced into the reaction zone at 150-330‹ C., and the gaseous effluents from the reaction zone being subjected to a rapid cooling or quenching. The effluent gases from the cooling or quenching zone may be passed together with air to an oxidizing tower wherein nitric oxide is reconverted to nitrogen peroxide and the gases from the tower may be scrubbed with nitric acid which dissolves the nitrogen peroxide. The resulting nitric acid solution may be degasified and the nitric acid and nitrogen peroxide obtained recycled. The gases from the scrubbing operation may be further scrubbed with an alkaline solution and propane may be recovered from the resulting effluent gases. An example describes the nitration of propane to a mixture of nitromethane, nitroethane, 1-nitropropane and 2-nitropropane.

    Abstract: Nitroparaffins are made by reacting an alkyl nitrite, having at least 2 carbon atoms, with nitric acid or an oxide of nitrogen higher than nitric oxide in the vapour phase at a temperature of at least 240 DEG C. The reaction proceeds with splitting of the alkyl nitrite molecule to yield a nitroparaffin containing fewer carbon atoms than the starting material. Nitrogen dioxide is specified as a suitable nitrating agent. Examples relate to the preparation of nitromethane, nitroethane, 2-nitropropane, nitrobutane and nitropentane.
