    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a lactam useful as a raw material for organic syntheses, stable polar solvent, etc., in high selectivity on an industrial scale at a low cost, by adding a small amount of an acidic substance to a reaction system and reducing a specific cyclic acid imide with hydrogen in the presence of a metallic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula IV can be produced by reducing a cyclic acid imide of formula I [R is H or 1-5C alkyl; R is >=2C saturated or unsaturated bivalent organic group) (e.g. N-methylsuccinimide) or its precursor such as the compound of formula III with H2 in the presence of a catalyst composed of at least one kind of metallic component selected from Co, Mo, W, etc., at 160-300 deg.C under 10-300kg/cm G pressure in a reaction system added with 10-5,000ppm of an acidic substance such as phosphoric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, etc., based on the flow rate (weight) in the reaction system. EFFECT:By-production of gaseous component such as lower hydrocarbon (e.g. CH3) can be suppressed. USE:Raw material for the synthesis of polymers by ring-opening polymerization, etc.
