    Abstract: An MPEG-1 layer 3 audio encoder, including a scalefactor generator for determining first scalefactors for encoding a block of audio data if a temporal masking transient is not detected in said block of audio data; and for selecting the maximum of said scalefactors for encoding said block of audio data if a temporal masking transient is detected in said block of audio data to enable greater compression of said audio data. Increases in quantization error due to use of the maximum scalefactor are pre-masked or post-masked by the temporal masking transient. In cases where the last portion of a block includes a temporal masking transient that masks the preceding portions of the block, the maximum scalefactor is only used to encode the block if the resulting increase in quantization error is less than 30% of the quantization error for the block.

    Abstract: A method of selecting a motion vector for use in a motion estimation system is disclosed. The motion vector defines movement of a block of pixels between a search window and a reference frame. The method includes the steps of scanning a search window in a fixed order for a suitable match with an area of the reference frame such that each search position within a current row or column of the window is one pixel away from a previous search position, defining a preferred point in the search window, calculating a primary norm function with reference to the preferred point for a given position in each row or column, calculating a norm function for each search position based on a linear increment of the primary norm function for the respective row or column, calculating an Absolute Error (AE) for each search position, based on a difference between a given property of the search position and a position in the reference window, and selecting a motion vector, the displacement of the motion vector being defined in terms of the search position having the smallest AE and the smallest norm function. Apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

    Abstract: Two preferred embodiments provide slot synchronization of an initial cell search. Two Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters are used to correlate the synchronization codes transmitted in the downlink (forward link). A sign bit is taken after the first FIR to significantly reduce the hardware requirements for the second FIR, and thus the whole system. The correlated results from the second FIR can be further processed using two different algorithms. The first adds a square operation to the correlated results whilst the second takes the magnitude before passing to the next stage. Regardless of which algorithm is adopted, the results are accumulated (I and Q), instead of averaged, and stored in a memory location for each successive correlation over the same location in different slots. The physical-layer processor (PLP) then reads the accumulated results from the memory location and searches for the peak position corresponding to the slot boundary.

    Abstract: An edge enhancement system, including a selective edge controller for determining one or more properties of an edge of image data, and for generating one or more weighting factors on the basis of properties of the edge; and a scaling module for scaling an edge enhancement signal by the weighting factors to control the degree of edge enhancement. The image data may represent a still or moving (i.e., video) image. A max-min search circuit determines maximum and minimum turning points closest to the center of the data processing window and that are located on opposing sides of the window, to determine values and locations of maximum and minimum pixels of the edge. An edge-directed prefiltering circuit reduces the amplification of edge fuzziness by smoothing close the edges vertical prior to enhancement. An aliasing protection circuit reduces the visibility of sawtooth defects on predominantly horizontal diagonal edges.

    Abstract: The preferred embodiment addresses the fixed codebook search portion of the speech codec, to efficiently support two codecs by a single implementation. In particular, the two codecs are G.723.1 (5.3kbps) and G.729A. By modifying the fixed codebook search algorithm of G.723.1 to be similar to that of G.729A would advantageously result in a single fixed codebook search algorithm being used for both these codecs. Present G.723.1 fixed codebook search algorithms are based on "Focused Nested-loop search". Proposing a new G.723.1 codebook search algorithm to be based on "Depth-first tree search" would then have the desired effect of having one fixed codebook search for both G.723.1 and G.729A.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for decoding a bitstream (100) of transform coded multi-channel audio data. The bitstream is subjected to a block decoding process (101) to obtain for each input audio channel within the multi-channel audio data a corresponding block of frequency coefficients (102). Each block of frequency coefficients (102) is assigned a higher precision inverse transform or a lower precision inverse transform according to predetermined characteristics of the audio data represented by the block.     Abstract: In a transform encoder for audio data, encoded data in the form of mantissas, exponents and coupling data is packed into fixed length frames in an output bitstream. The fields within the frame for carrying the different forms of data are variable in length, and apace within the frame must be allocated between them to fit all of the required information into the frame. The space required by the various data types depends on certain encoding parameters, which are calculated for a particular frame before the data is encoded, thus ensuring that the encoded data will fit into the frame before the computationally expensive encoding process is carried out. Information in relation to, for example, transform length, coupling parameters and exponent strategy are determined, which allows the space required for the coupling and exponent data to be calculated. The mantissa encoding parameters can then be iteratively determined so that the encoded mantissas will fit into the frame with the other encoded data. The determined encoding parameters are stored and the audio data is encoded according to those parameters after it has been determined that the encoded data will fit into the frame.
