    Abstract: DNA segments which act to increase or activate the expression of genes in plants are described and characterized. These transcription activating elements contain DNA sequences from the upstream untranscribed flanking region of the octopine synthase gene ( ocs ) of the T-DNA of Agrobacterium tumefaciens . The ocs transcription activating element contains a first essential component which has the identifying sequence 5ʹ-ACGTAAGCGTTACGT-3ʹ. A second nonessential component having the identifying sequence 5ʹ-GATGTTAACATC-3ʹ contributes to the level of gene expression. Recombinant DNA molecules containing the plant transcription activating element and a plant-­expressible gene under its control are provided. The transcription activating element described and DNA molecules containing it are useful in a method for increasing the level of expression of genes in plant tissue.

    Abstract: A capsule (10) for insertion into the rumen of an animal through the oesophagus and adapted to be retained therein while releasing a therapeutic or nutrient composition. The capsule comprises an elongate. tubular body member (12) for housing a quantity of said composition and a plurality of elongate wings (18), with each wing pivotally attached at one end thereof to the body member in the vicinity of the leading end (14) of the body.     Abstract: A method of forming a composite article having a first and a second metal component, and a resultant composite metal article, wherein a flux coating is applied over at least a substantially oxide-free bond surface of the first component, the first component with said flux coating is preheated and, with said first component positioned in a mould to fill a portion of a cavity of the mould, a melt for providing the second component is poured into the mould so as to flow over said bond surface; the first component being preheated to a first temperature and the melt being poured at a second temperature such that, on flowing over the bond surface, the meld displaces said flux coating and wets said bond surface, and that such initial temperature equilibration between said surface and the melt results in an interface temperature therebetween at least equal to the liquidus temperature of the melt, thereby resulting on solidification of the melt in attainment of a bond between the components.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an isolated DNA sequence which encodes at least part of the tomato enzyme endopolygalacturonase PG1 β-subunit. This DNA sequence preferably encodes polypeptide the N-terminal amino acid sequence of which is: E-K-H-S-G-D-I-H-G-A-T-Y-S-D-K.     Abstract: An ultrasonic sensor utilising a polarization maintaining optical fibre. The invention comprises a polarization maintaining fibre (4) with a light source (1) to launch into the fibre light beams respectively aligned with each of the principal axes of the fibre and an output detection system (9, 10, 11, 12) to determine phase difference induced between the beams by ultrasonic waves (6) incident upon the fibre. Bias control (15) can be provided to compensate for environmentally induced phase differences. The invention also comprises a polarization maintaining fibre (25) divided into a sensor portion (27) and a lead portion (26). These portions are optically joined together by a 45 DEG joint (28) so that a beam aligned with one principal axis with the lead portion travelling from this portion to the sensor portion is decomposed into two components respectively aligned with each of the two principal axes in the sensor portion. A light source (21) and optics (22) launch a linear polarised beam into the lead portion in alignment with one of the principal axes and a detection system (31, 32, 36, 37) determines phase difference induced by incident ultrasonic waves between the two components passing through the sensor portion.
